Mal. Danziger Werftarbeiter lösten durch ihren Streik einen Umsturz aus, der das politische System in Polen veränderte und den Zusammenbruch der kommunistischen Welt im Osten einleitete. Wie konnte es geschehen, dass nach einer jahrzehntelangen repressiven Diktatur Menschen ihr Leben riskierten, ohne dass zunächst Aussicht auf Erfolg bestand? Was bringt Menschen dazu, ihr Leben für eine Idee, für ein Ideal, für die Freiheit aufs Spiel zu setzen? Diesen Fragen soll im Folgenden nachgegangen werden. Dabei gibt es sehr unterschiedliche Antworten auf solche Fragen. Eine Antwort, die heute weit verbreitet ist, lautet, dass gesellschaftliche Konflikte bzw. Kämpfe, in aller Regel Interessenskonflikte sind. Aufruhr, Protest und Widerstand werden mit ungleicher Verteilung von Lebenschancen oder Gütern erklärt. Dieses Verständnis geht auf die Philosophen Hobbes und Locke zurück. Beide, mit gewissen Abweichungen, betrachteten den Menschen als ein eigensüchtiges, nur auf den eigenen Vorteil bedachtes Wesen. Einen anderen Standpunkt, der in dieser Arbeit diskutiert werden soll, vertritt der deutsche Philosoph Hegel. Dieser glaubte, dass der Mensch in erster Linie ein Wesen ist, das in seiner Würde anerkannt werden möchte. Deshalb betrachtete er den Verlauf der Menschheitsgeschichte als einen Kampf um Anerkennung. Dabei hat Hegel zwei Versuche unternommen eine Theorie zu entwickeln, die gesellschaftliche Wandlungsprozesse auf einen Kampf um Anerkennung zurückführt. Der eine Ansatz leitet sich aus der Frage ab, wie sich Selbstbewusstsein konstituiert und der andere wie ein sittliches Gemeinwesen entsteht. Beide Ansätze sollen hier diskutiert werden. Abschließend soll eine theoriegeleitete Analyse der Solidarność-Bewegung erfolgen. Es soll geprüft werden, ob die Streiks, die zur Gründung der unabhängigen Gewerkschaft führten, auf einem Kampf um Anerkennung gründeten. Geeignet ist dieser Protest, weil er zwar wegen wirtschaftlicher Motive - Preiserhöhung für Lebensmittel - begann, aber schnell klar wurde, dass es um mehr geht.

The volume focuses on the years following the First World War (1918–1923), when political, military, cultural, social and economic developments consolidated to a high degree in Eastern Europe. This period was shaped, on the one hand, by the efforts to establish an international structure for peace and to set previously oppressed nations on the road to emancipation. This important new book deals with the changing nature of war in the post-Cold War era and the emergence of new forms of warfare in which warlords, mercenaries and terrorists play an increasingly important role. In the modern era, warfare came to play a crucial role in the formation of states, whereas the new wars emerging at the beginning of the 21st century have mostly gone together with the failure or collapse of states. The author draws out the key shifts involved in this process: from symmetrical conflicts between states to asymmetrical global relationships of force; from national armies to increasingly private or commercial bands of warlords, child soldiers and mercenaries; from pitched battles to protracted conflicts in which there is often little fighting and most of the violence is directed against civilians. Changes in weapons technology have combined with complex economic factors to make the prospect of endlessly simmering wars a real danger in the years to come. Against this background, the author outlines the rise of a novel form of international terrorism, conceived more as a political method of communication than as an element in a military strategy. National Races explores how politics interacted with transnational science in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This interaction produced powerful, racialized national identity discourses whose influence continues to resonate in today's culture and politics. Ethnologists, anthropologists, and raciologists compared modern physical types with ancient skeletal finds to unearth the deep prehistoric past and true nature of nations. These scientists understood certain physical types to be what Richard McMahon calls "national races," or the ageless biological essences of nations. Contributors to this volume address a central tension in anthropological race classification. On one hand, classifiers were nationalists who explicitly or implicitly used race narratives to promote political agendas. Their accounts of prehistoric geopolitics treated "national races" as the proxies of nations in order to legitimize present-day geopolitical positions. On the other hand, the transnational community of race scholars resisted the centrifugal forces of nationalism. Their interdisciplinary project was a vital episode in the development of the social sciences, using biological race classification to explain the history, geography, relationships, and psychologies of nations. National Races goes to the heart of tensions between nationalism and transnationalism, politics and science, by examining transnational science from the perspective of its peripheries. Contributors to the book supplement the traditional focus of historians on France, Britain, and Germany, with myriad case studies and examples of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century racial and national identities in countries such as Russia, Italy, Poland, Greece, and Yugoslavia, and among Jewish anthropologists.
