So wie Jesus dem Petrus die Gewalt übertragen hat, so beanspruchten die Bischöfe von Rom dieses Primatenamt für sich. Aber das Amt des Primaten war nicht von Anfang an im gleichen Umfang vorhanden, wie wir es heute kennen. Es ist eng verbunden mit der Geschichte und der geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Kirche über die Jahrhunderte hinweg. Die Entwicklung des Primatenamtes war Höhen und Tiefen unterworfen. In dieser Hausarbeit soll ein Tiefpunkt in der geschichtlichen Entwicklung untersucht und dargestellt werden: Die Zeit des großen abendländischen Schismas und der Konziliarismus. Zu Beginn dieser Arbeit soll die Entstehung des Schisma und seine Manifestierung aufgezeigt werden. Im Anschluss werden die verschiedenen Lösungsmöglichkeiten mit der konziliaren Idee aufgezeigt. In einem zweiten Teil wird ferner das Ringen des Papsttums mit den Vertretern des Konziliarismus ein Thema sein. Abschließend wird eine kurze Darstellung des Endes des Konziliarismus durch den Beginn der Renaissance aufgezeigt.

Aus ihr entwickelte sich die protestantische Kirche. Der Drang des Menschen, neue Wege zu beschreiten und die zahlreichen Missstände im Äußeren und Inneren der Kirche führte im 16. Jahrhundert zur Entwicklung einer neuen Glaubensrichtung. Anders als etwa 100 Jahre später, konnte diese Trennung der Obödienzen im 15. Jahrhundert durch das Konzil von Konstanz noch einmal verhindert werden. Bereits seit dem Konzil von Vienne bestand die Idee, einem allgemeinen Konzil eine weit umfassendere Funktion, nämlich die letzte und höchste Instanz der Gesamtkirche zu sein, zuzuweisen. Diese Idee beruht vor allem auf der "konziliaren Theorie" von Marsilius von Padua, einem revolutionären Theoretiker der „Volkssouveränität“ und dessen Anhänger Wilhelm von Ockham. Sie vertraten die Meinung, die Kirche solle sich von unten nach oben aufbauen, wobei ein Allgemeines Konzil die Kirche "repräsentieren" soll und über allen Gliedern steht.1 Mit Bonifaz VIII. hatte eine große Epoche der Papstgeschichte ein tragisches Ende genommen. Sein Versuch mit der Bulle Unam sanctam die geistliche Weltregierung des Bischofs von Rom zu verwirklichen, hatte zur Niederlage geführt. Das lange "babylonischen Exil" von Avignon hatte das Papsttum so sehr geschwächt, dass es zum Großen Abendländischen Schisma kommen musste. Um dem ein Ende zu bereiten, traf man sich in Konstanz zu einem Konzil und arbeitete ein Dekret aus, welches diesem unheilvollem Zustand ein Ende bereiten sollte. Dieses Dekret, haec sancta, soll hier bei der Bearbeitung des Themas, die causa unionis auf dem Konzil, die Grundlage darstellen. Als Kardinal Angelo Roncalli als Nachfolger des verstorbenen Papstes Pius XII. hervorging, und sich den Namen Johannes XXIII. gab, ließ eine alte theologische Streitfrage wieder beleben. Die Wiederholung der Ordnungszahl dreiundzwanzig bedeutete nichts weniger, als dass die beiden Päpste Alexander V. und Johannes XXIII. von Rom nunmehr als illegitim betrachtet wurden. Das aber würde bedeuten, dass auch die Rechtmäßigkeit der Einberufung des Konstanzer Konzils in Frage gestellt werden müsse. Diese und andere Fragen finden immer wieder ihre Bearbeiter. Hauptsächlich sind W. Brandmüller und R. Bäumer zu nennen, die sich ausführlich in Monographien und Aufsätzen mit Themen rund um das Konstanzer Konzil beschäftigen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit allerdings soll es eher um die faktische Behandlung der Vorgänge auf dem Konstanzer Konzil und das Dekret haec sancta gehen.

This volume contains studies on Nicholas of Cusa and his times. The first section is concerned with Cusanus' context, beginning with a historiographic essay by Francis Oakley on the impact of Brian Tierney's Foundations of the Conciliar Theory. Among the topics addressed are the long-term continuation of the Council of Basel (1431-1449) and the issues of ecclesiastical income which it addressed. The second part is concerned with Cusanus' thought on the Church, both in his conciliarist and papalist phases. Included is the first translation into English of Nicholas' Reformatio generalis. Attention also is paid to Cusanus' reforming efforts and the relationship of his thought on these issues to his earliest speculative writings. The third part is concerned with Nicholas' ideas on Christ and mystical experience. Particular attention is paid to the De visione dei, including its relationship to Renaissance art. The Council of Basel (1431-1449) met to defend the faith and reform the Church. Its efforts to deal with Hussite heresy and reform the Roman Curia led to conflict with Pope Eugenius IV (1431-1447). The council divided over the site of a council of union with the Eastern churches. Some left to attend Eugenius’ Council of Florence (1438-1443). While that council was negotiating reunion with Eastern churches, in 1439 Basel was acting to claim supremacy and depose Eugenius. The ensuing struggle went on for a decade before Basel and its pope, Felix V (Amadeus VIII of Savoy), gave up under pressure from the princes.
