Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Geowissenschaften / Geographie - Sonstiges, Note: 1,0, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Institut für Kulturgeographie), Veranstaltung: Regionales Proseminar Iberische Halbinsel, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Geschichte ist geprägt vom Aufstieg und von den Niedergängen vieler Staaten und Reiche. Spanien und Portugal bieten zwei gute Beispiele dafür. Beide Staaten befanden sich im 16. Jahrhundert auf dem Gipfel ihrer Macht und verfügten über für die damalige Zeit riesige Kolonialreiche. Seitdem hatte in beiden Ländern aber der Niedergang eingesetzt, der sowohl Spanien als auch Portugal ihre Bedeutung für die Weltpolitik entziehen sollte. Zum Ende des für beide Staaten unruhig verlaufenen 19. Jahrhunderts befanden sich Spanien und Portugal in instabilen Verhältnissen. Die anstehenden Probleme innerhalb der Staaten ließen die Zukunft düster erscheinen. An diesem Punkt will die vorliegende Arbeit ansetzen. Es soll gezeigt werden, wie sich die beiden iberischen Staaten Spanien und Portugal aus dieser schwierigen Lage mittels Revolutionen zu befreien suchten und schließlich mit den Diktaturen unter Franco beziehungsweise Salazar die vielleicht schwärzesten Jahrzehnte ihres Bestehens erleben mussten. Abschließend soll noch kurz auf die Demokratisierungsbestrebungen in beiden Staaten seit dem Ende der Diktaturen 1974/1975 eingegangen werden. Als Ende des Betrachtungszeitraums ist dabei der EG-Beitritt beider Länder im Januar 1986 gewählt.

Uber Jahrhunderte wa ren sich die Spanier uneins, ob sie denn kulturell und historisch-po litisch zu Europa gehorten, ob ihre Zukunft in Europas liege. Die jiingste Geschichte hat entschieden. Spanien hat den Sprung nach Europa gewagt und ist in Uberwindung seiner inneren Ambivalenz zu einem europiiischen Land geworden. "Europa" war die Antwort auf die sich Anfang der 70er Jahre in Spanien auftiirmenden Probleme. Bis dahin hielt das aus dem Biir gerkrieg hervorgegangene Franco-Regime das Land vor all em poli tisch von Europa abgekoppelt. Unter ihm hatte sich Spanien freilich yom Agrarland zum Industrie- und Dienstleistungsland entwickelt.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 1,3, , language: English, abstract: Nobody could have thought when on Thursday, April 25, 1974 in Lisbon, shortly after midnight the catholic Rádio Renascença played the song Grandola Vila Morena, it would lead to such consequences. The song was the signal for the young military officers of the Movimento das Forcas Armadas (MFA) to carry out the plans for a coup d’état. Only minor resistance from the security police occurred, so that by late morning the crowds were flooding the streets, cheering the soldiers, and putting carnations in the barrels of the rifles. The coup was efficiently and successfully and still on the same day, the deposed dictator Marcello Caetano surrendered to the new military leaders and already the next day flew into exile. This coup d’état marked the death of the oldest, over 40 years old dictatorship in Europe, lead by António de Oliveira Salazar (Ferreira, 1986). On the one hand marked April 25 the beginning of transition to democracy in Portugal and later even lead to a consolidated democracy. On the other hand this day marked the beginning of the third wave of democratization. The fall of communist regimes in Eastern Europe, the breakdown of the Latin American authoritarian regimes followed after Portugal brought the ball rolling. And the snowball effect influenced many other authoritarian regimes in the world to democratize as well. States like Spain, Brazil and Hungary were to follow the example of Portugal. It is the aim of this paper to analyze what the causes were, that lead to the revolution, how the process of the transition occurred and what the consequences of April 25 were.
