Johnsons Roman kreist um die Jahrestage einer Familiengeschichte, festgemacht an einem Jahr im Leben und Bewusstsein von Gesine Cresspahl, der Tochter des Kunsttischlers Heinrich Cresspahl, 1933 im mecklenburgischen Jerichow geboren. Gesine ist auf der Suche nach ihren Wurzeln, angetrieben von der Frage, wer sie ist und woher sie kommt. Lebte sie vorher in D sseldorf, fasst sie 1961 den Entschluss, mit ihrer Tochter Marie, geboren 1957, Deutschland zu verlassen. In New York angekommen, bernimmt sie einen Posten in einer gro en Bank, den sie in Aussicht auf einen Aufstieg begleitet. Die kleine Marie wird schon bald zu einem Kind der Oberen Westseite von Manhattan. Uwe Johnson macht seine Protagonistin Gesine Cresspahl zum Zuordnungspunkt seiner Familiengeschichte. Johnson kreiert Lebensl ufe und bildet deren Verwandlung in Todesf lle ab. Er zeigt auf, wie Menschen von der Geschichte als Menschenmaterial verbraucht werden. Diesen Vernichtungsprozess setzt er nicht in das Medium einer entindividualisierenden Sprache um, vielmehr bezweckt er Widerstand durch Sprache. Uwe Johnson beschreibt bed chtig und keinen Umweg der Genauigkeit scheuend. W hrend Gewalt wahllos um sich greift, kommt es ihm auf die noch so kleinen Unterschiede an: "Seine staunend, z rtlich beschreibende Sprache m chte, ob in New York oder Jerichow, noch jeden Blick, jede Kopfbewegung, jeden Vogelfl gelschlag, jedes Regen- oder Verkehrsger usch, jedes Z gern in einer Stimme zu etwas ganz und gar Unverwechselbarem ernennen."
