Nach Kriegsende wurde das Gebäude – das sogenannte Pawlow-Haus – als Symbol für den Wiederaufbau gesehen. Anlässlich des 80. Jahrestags präsentiert Iain MacGregor neue Einsichten in diese schicksalhafte Schlacht und schildert, wie sie von einfachen Soldaten und kommandierenden Offizieren aus zwei gegnerischen Divisionen gesehen wurde; darunter sind auch die Tagebücher des deutschen Offiziers Fritz Roske, der zur entscheidenden Figur der deutschen Kapitulation wurde.
