Metaphysik": In seiner Metaphysik argumentiert Aristoteles (gegen Platons Annahme von abstrakten Entitäten) zunächst dafür, dass die konkreten Einzeldinge (wie Sokrates) die Substanzen, d. h. das Grundlegende aller Wirklichkeit sind. Für ein glückliches Leben muss man Verstandestugenden und (durch Erziehung und Gewöhnung) Charaktertugenden ausbilden, wozu ein entsprechender Umgang mit Begierden und Emotionen gehört. "Das Organon": Der Themenbereich Sprache, Logik und Wissen ist vor allem in den Schriften behandelt, die traditionell unter dem Titel Organon zusammengestellt sind. "Über die Dichtkunst": In seiner Theorie der Dichtung behandelt Aristoteles insbesondere die Tragödie, deren Funktion aus seiner Sicht darin besteht, Furcht und Mitleid zu erregen, um beim Zuschauer eine Reinigung von diesen Emotionen zu bewirken (katharsis). "Die Physik": Sie befasst sich mit der Erklärung und Erläuterung (Definition) einiger grundlegender Begriffe, die bei der Beschreibung von Naturvorgängen im täglichen Leben gebraucht werden. Die wichtigsten davon sind: Raum, Zeit, Bewegung und Ursache. Es handelt sich nicht um eine mathematische Darlegung der Grundzüge der Natur in heutigem Sinne.

Professor John Douglas Macready offers a post-foundational account of human dignity by way of a reconstructive reading of Hannah Arendt. He argues that Arendt’s experience of political violence and genocide in the twentieth century, as well as her experience as a stateless person, led her to rethink human dignity as an intersubjective event of political experience. By tracing the contours of Arendt’s thoughts on human dignity, Professor Macready offers convincing evidence that Arendt was engaged in retrieving the political experience that gave rise to the concept of human dignity in order to move beyond the traditional accounts of human dignity that relied principally on the status and stature of human beings. This allowed Arendt to retrofit the concept for a new political landscape and reconceive human dignity in terms of stance—how human beings stand in relationship to one another. Professor Macready elucidates Arendt’s latent political ontology as a resource for developing strictly political account of human dignity hat he calls conditional dignity—the view that human dignity is dependent on political action, namely, the preservation and expression of dignity by the person, and/or the recognition by the political community. He argues that it is precisely this “right” to have a place in the world—the right to belong to a political community and never to be reduced to the status of stateless animality—that indicates the political meaning of human dignity in Arendt’s political philosophy.

In 2016, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that Max Brod’s posthumous papers which included a collection of Kafka’s manuscripts be transferred to the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem. If Kafka’s writings may be seen to belong to Jewish national culture and if they may be considered part of Israel’s heritage, then their analysis within a Jewish framework should be both viable and valuable. This volume is dedicated to the research of Franz Kafka’s late narrative “The Burrow” and its autobiographical and theological significance. Research is extended to incorporate many fields of study (architecture, sound studies, philosophy, cultural studies, Jewish studies, literary studies) to illustrate the dynamics at work within the text which reveal the Jewish aspects implicitly thematicized. Examination of the structure created, the nature of sound perceived, the atmosphere experienced and the acts performed by the protagonist serve as the foundation of this analysis and offer new access to Kafka’s work by presenting an interpretive, space-semantic approach. “Der Bau” is presented as a life concept given the task of constituting identity, highlighting the critical link between the literary and biographical Kafka and demonstrating the necessity of understanding the author as a Jewish writer to understand his late narrative. For her outstanding research project, Andrea Newsom Ebarb was awarded the “Forschungsförderpreis der Vereinigung der Freunde der Universität Mainz e.V.” in 2023.
