English summary: Anna-Maria Losch examines the Faculty of Law at the University of Berlin on its way to National Socialism. This study encompasses the final phase of the Weimar Republic (1930 - January 1933), the so-called National Socialist revolution in 1933 (and its consequences up to 1934) and the path towards consolidation (1934 to 1936/37). The author takes a separate look at what developments meant for the students, the professors and the other university instructors, and in considering each of these groups is able to present an overall picture. She discusses changes in the curriculum and university regulations and the relationship to the Ministry of Education and Culture. She directs her attention towards the fate of the professors who were exiled and to the dramatic struggle for power among the 'ardent National Socialists' Carl Schmitt, Karl-August Eckhardt and Reinhard Hohn.

There were eighty of them. They were young, clever and cultivated;they were barely in their thirties when Adolf Hitler came to power.Their university studies in law, economics, linguistics, philosophyand history marked them out for brilliant careers. They chose tojoin the repressive bodies of the Third Reich, especially theSecurity Service (SD) and the Nazi Party’s elite protectionunit, the SS. They theorized and planned the extermination oftwenty million individuals of allegedly ‘inferior’races. Most of them became members of the paramilitary death squadsknown as Einsatzgruppen and participated in the slaughter of over amillion people. Based on extensive archival research, Christian Ingrao tells thegripping story of these children of the Great War, focusing on thenetworks of fellow activists, academics and friends in which theymoved, studying the way in which they envisaged war and the‘world of enemies’ which, in their view, threatenedthem. The mechanisms of their political commitment are revealed, and their roles in Nazism and mass murder. Thanks to thispioneering study, we can now understand how these men came tobelieve what they did, and how these beliefs became sodestructive. The history of Nazism, shows Ingrao, is also a history of beliefsin which a powerful military machine was interwoven with personalexperiences, fervour, anguish, utopia and cruelty.

This book traces the life and legacy of a German Jewish lawyer, F A Mann, who moved to the UK in 1933 fleeing racial persecution from Germany, and later became one of the best-known legal minds of his age, equally versed and experienced in legal practice and legal scholarship. With contributions from established and emerging scholars, legal practitioners, and members of the judiciary from around the world, F A Mann: The Lawyer and His Legacy is split into three parts. Part I sets out a legal biography of F A Mann, with a particular emphasis on his background, network, and the insights afforded by previously unstudied archival materials. Part II covers the broad range of sub-disciplines and practice areas in which Mann was active and explores the way in which he helped to form them. Part III, on monetary law, reflects both Mann's outstanding influence and the current topicality of monetary law issues. Drawing on some 12,500 letters of Mann's personal correspondence with judges, academics, and legal practitioners, this book explores how Mann's biography, his equal familiarity with German and English law and with academia and legal practice, and his wide range of legal interests have contributed to his lasting influence on law and legal scholarship.

The Oxford Handbook Of Carl Schmitt written by Jens Meierhenrich and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Philosophy categories.

The Oxford Handbook of Carl Schmitt collects thirty original chapters on the diverse oeuvre of one of the most controversial thinkers of the twentieth century. Carl Schmitt (1888-1985) was a German theorist whose anti-liberalism continues to inspire scholars and practitioners on both the Left and the Right. Despite Schmitt's rabid anti-semitism and partisan legal practice in Nazi Germany, the appeal of his trenchant critiques of, among other things, aestheticism, representative democracy, and international law as well as of his theoretical justifications of dictatorship and rule by exception is undiminished. Uniquely located at the intersection of law, the social sciences, and the humanities, this volume brings together sophisticated yet accessible interpretations of Schmitt's sprawling thought and complicated biography. The contributors hail from diverse disciplines, including art, law, literature, philosophy, political science, and history. In addition to opening up exciting new avenues of research, The Oxford Handbook of Carl Schmitt provides the intellectual foundations for an improved understanding of the political, legal, and cultural thought of this most infamous of German theorists. A substantial introduction places the trinity of Schmitt's thought in a broad context.
