Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2013 im Fachbereich Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 2,0, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Arbeit untersucht die bäuerlichen Strukturen der griechischen Archaik. Als wesentliche Quellen aus dieser Zeit gelten die "Werke und Tage" von Hesiod und Ausarbeitungen von Homer. Mit seinem Werk "Nachbarschaft und Dorfgemeinschaft im archaischen und klassischen Griechenland" beleuchtet Winfried Schmitz facettenreich die drei Ebenen Oikos, Dorfgemeinschaft und Polis, setzt sie miteinander in Beziehung und liefert, bezugnehmend auf seine Forschungsmethodik, eine umfassende und vernetzte Darstellung der sozialen Struktur der archaischen Gesellschaft. Einleitend wird die Bedarfswirtschaft vorgestellt. Es wird gezeigt, welche Produkte die Bauern im Oikosbetrieb herstellten und was sie anbauten. Anschließend wird die Frage geklärt, weshalb das Leben der Bauern eine große Herausforderung bedeutete und welche Strategien zur Risikominimierung und Abwehr von existenzbedrohenden Gefahren getroffen werden konnten. Darauf aufbauend wird die gesellschaftliche Stellung der Voll- und Kleinbauern beleuchtet und es wird gezeigt, welche Rolle im Leben der Landwirte Status und Ehre spielten. Im Anschluss daran wird die Rolle der Frau thematisiert, der Wirkungskreis sowie das Prinzip der Arbeitsteilung im Oikos vorgestellt. Anschließend wird geklärt, weshalb die Übergabe des Oikos eine äußerst konfliktträchtige Situation bedeutete. Bezugnehmend auf die bereits erwähnten Strategien zur Risikominimierung wird das Verhältnis zur Nachbarschaft hinterfragt, der Nachbarschaftsbegriff definiert und die Bedeutung nachbarschaftlicher Beziehungen diskutiert. Es wird gezeigt, dass Verstöße gegen das allgemein geltende Normensystem durch die sogenannten Rügebräuche sanktioniert werden konnten und das Normen, stellvertretend für Gesetze, das vorsolonische Zusammenleben regelten. Ziel ist es nicht, die Polis in all ihren Facetten zu besprechen. Es soll lediglich der Versuch unternommen werden, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in Grundzügen darzustellen und das zentrale Thema Oikos in Anlehnung an die Methodik von Schmitz klarer ein- und abzugrenzen.

Oikos und Polis stellen einen zentralen Gegenstand der althistorischen Forschung dar. Eine Vielzahl von Arbeiten hat sich mit der Entstehung der Polis als politischem Verband auseinandergesetzt und dabei den Weg vom Oikos als dominierender sozialer Einheit in archaischer Zeit zur Polis, dem übergeordneten politischen Verband, nachgezeichnet. Ebenso wie Aristoteles die Nachbarschaft und das Dorf in der theoretischen Behandlung der Polis ausklammert, sind auch in der althistorischen Forschung die sozialen Institutionen zwischen Oikos und Polis vernachlässigt worden. So war vom Autor zunächst das Quellenmaterial zu sammeln und zu sichten. Auf dieser Grundlage wird, ausgehend von der Institution von Nachbarschaft und Dorfgemeinschaft, das Verhältnis von Oikos und Polis analysiert, um so die Verzahnung beider Einrichtungen und deren Veränderung im Laufe der Zeit deutlicher zu machen.

Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? How do blockages in the flow of rivers and underground springs interrupt the intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge and hence the ability of local communities to construct collective identities rooted in a sense of place?
