Ein Witz passt beinahe zu jedem Anlass, umfasst eine Vielzahl von Themen, übermittelt versteckte Informationen, spielt mit Sprache und regt zum Lachen an. Er ist in jeder sozialen Klasse zeitgemäß und in jeder Altersgruppe von Bedeutung. Deshalb ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass dem Witz in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine große Aufmerksamkeit zu Teil wurde. Ein Besuch im Buchladen eröffnet dem interessierten Leser eine unüberschaubare Auswahl an Witzbüchern. Auch ansonsten scheint die Bundesrepublik ein Ort zu sein, an dem gern und viel gelacht wird. Humor gibt es überall. Comedy-Shows sind aus dem Fernsehen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Das System der BRD bietet dem politischen Witz keinen ersprießlichen „Nährboden“. Ganz anders verhält es sich mit der politischen Witzkultur in diktatorischen Staatsformen. Dort fungiert der politische Witz als Spiegelbild der Gesellschaft. Der Politwitz ist die Frucht jener Gesellschaften, die enorme Missstände aufweisen, in der die Menschen unzufrieden sind und versuchen, ihre Aggression durch Witze abzubauen. Vornehmlich im Dritten Reich und in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik suchten die Menschen eine Möglichkeit, ihrer Missstimmung Ausdruck zu verleihen. Der politische Flüsterwitz gilt als Produkt dieser Diktaturen. Indem die Menschen ihre eigene Wirklichkeit in Witzen konstruierten, konnten sie der trostlosen Realität entkommen. Der Politwitz wurde im Gegensatz zur Witzkultur der heutigen Zeit hinter vorgehaltener Hand weitergegeben oder im engsten Familien- und Freundeskreis erzählt, da die Verbreitung von tendenziösen feindseligen Witzen mitunter harte Sanktionen zur Folge hatte. Obwohl der politische Witz nicht direkt das Potential hatte Revolutionen auszulösen oder zu progressiven Besserungen beizutragen, so musste doch jeder Witzerzähler „auf der Hut“ sein, wenn er sich kritisch über den Staat und dessen Organe äußerte. Der politische Witz in der DDR wird nun im weiteren Verlauf dieser Arbeit vornehmlich linguistisch betrachtet, da es von größter Bedeutung ist, den Witz als Textsorte zu definieren und dessen kommunikative Funktion näher in den Augenschein zu nehmen.

The fourteen chapters in this anthology feature original analyses of contemporary German-language literary texts, films, political cartoons, cabaret, and other types of performance. The artworks display a wide spectrum of humor modes, such as irony, satire, the grotesque, Jewish humor, and slapstick, as responses to unification with the accompanying euphoria, but also alienation and dislocation. Kerstin Hensel’s Lärchenau, Christoph Hein’s Landnahme, and vignette collections by Jakob Hein (Antrag auf ständige Ausreise und andere Mythen der DDR) and Wladimir Kaminer (Es gab keinen Sex im Sozialismus) are interpreted as examples of the grotesque. The popular films Lola rennt, Sonnenallee, Herr Lehmann, NVA, Alles auf Zucker!, and Mein Führer—Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler are reexamined through the lens of traditional and more recent humor or comic book theories. The contributors focus on how each artwork enriches four prominent postwall German cultural trends: post-unification identity reconstruction, Vergangenheitsbewältigung (including Hitler humor), New German Popular Literature (Christian Kracht’s ironic subtexts), and immigrant perspectives (a “third voice” in the East-West binary reflected here pointedly in Eulenspiegel cartoons). To date, no other scholarly work provides as comprehensive an overview of the diverse strategies of humor used in the past two decades in German-speaking countries.
