In der Wirtschaftsgeschichte sind historische Ausarbeitungen zu marktnahen Themen wie Absatz- und Preispolitik weitgehend unterrepräsentiert. Am Beispiel der Porzellanmanufaktur Meißen im 18. Jahrhundert soll nun diese Lücke geschlossen werden. Die Meißner Manufaktur – seit 1710 die wohl berühmteste und älteste Porzellanmanufaktur Europas – gilt mit ihren künstlerisch hochwertigen Porzellanen als Inbegriff des Barock und Rokoko. Der Autor zeigt auf, dass Marketingthemen wie Preispolitik und -strategie keine Erscheinungen des modernen industriellen Zeitalters sind, sondern schon seit dem frühen 18. Jahrhundert die Entscheidungsträger im Manufakturwesen wesentlich beschäftigt haben. Die Studie untersucht anhand historischer Dokumente die vorherrschenden Preis- und Vertriebsstrategien, den operativen Einfluss der sächsischen Landesherrschaft unter dem "Porzellanliebhaber" August dem Starken und seinen Nachfolgern, die internen Entscheidungsprozesse zur Preisfindung, die verschiedenen Kalkulationsmethodiken, den Umgang mit dem Wettbewerb und nicht zuletzt auch die Entwicklung des betriebswirtschaftlichen Know-hows im vorindustriellen Zeitalter. Es zeigt sich, dass die damaligen Akteure im Umgang mit dem "weißen Gold" mehr als nur einmal preis- und absatzpolitisches Neuland betreten mussten.

During the 1970s the todays Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung, BMBWF) supported the founding of the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Austrian Chair at Stanford University in California. These foundings were the initial incentives for the world wide 'spreading' of similar institutions; currently nine Centers for Austrian and Central European Studies exist in seven states on three continents. The funding of the Ministry enables to connect senior with young scholars, to help the latter, to participate and benefit from the scientific connection of the former, as the Austrian say, `to sniff the scientific air', and to get in touch with the respective national scientific community, to avoid prejudices, and to spread a better understanding and knowledge about Austria and Central Europe. This volume contains the annual reports (2016/2017) of the Center Director's and the presented papers of their PhDs, which discuss various topics on (East-)Central European History from various perspectives and in different centuries.

“Money, money, and more money.” In the eyes of early modern warlords, these were the three essential prerequisites for waging war. The transnational studies presented here describe and explain how belligerent powers did indeed rely on thriving markets where military entrepreneurs provided mercenaries, weapons, money, credit, food, expertise, and other services. In a fresh and comprehensive examination of pre-national military entrepreneurship – its actors, structures and economic logic – this volume shows how readily business relationships for supplying armies in the 17th and 18th centuries crossed territorial and confessional boundaries. Global goods were central to the material culture of eighteenth-century country houses. Across Europe, mahogany furniture, Chinese wallpapers and Indian textiles formed the backdrop to genteel practices of drinking sweetened coffee, tea and chocolate from Chinese porcelain. They tied these houses and their wealthy owners into global systems of supply and the processes of colonialism and empire. Global Goods and the Country House builds on these narratives, and then challenges them by decentring our perspective. It offers a comparative framework that explores the definition, ownership and meaning of global goods outside the usual context of European imperial powers. What were global goods and what did they mean for wealthy landowners in places at the ‘periphery’ of Europe (Sweden and Wallachia), in the British colonies of North America and the Caribbean, or in the extra-colonial context (Japan or Rajasthan)? By addressing these questions, this volume offers fresh insights into the multi-directional flow of goods and cultures that enmeshed the eighteenth-century world. And by placing these goods in their specific material context - from the English country house to the princely palaces of Rajasthan - we gain a better understanding of their use and meaning, and of their role in linking the global and the local.
