Februar 1933 war eines der gravierenden Ereignisse der nationalsozialistischen Machergreifung.Hitler hatte zu jenem Zeitpunkt zwar schon im Wesentlichen die Kontrolle über den deutschen Staat ergriffen und war nicht mehr gewillt diese Position wieder herzugeben, aber die Möglichkeiten, die ihm dieser Vorfall bot, beschleunigten oder erleichterten ihm zumindest den Weg zur Errichtung eines totalitären Regimes. Hitler und seine Gefolgschaft machten schnell Marinus van der Luppe und die KPD als Sündenbock für den Brand aus und holten, aufgrund eines vermeintlichen kommunistischen Aufstands, zum Schlag gegen ihre unliebsamen politischen Gegner aus. In den folgenden Wochen entledigten sie sich Tausender Kontrahenten, indem sie diese verhafteten. Grundlage dafür lieferte die Reichstagsbrandverordnung, die sie bereits einen Tag nach dem Brand ohne große Gegenwehr verabschieden konnten. Dieses letztlich bis zum Zerfall des Dritten Reiches geltende Ausnahmegesetz ermöglichte ihnen die wesentlichsten Grundrechte der Bürger zu beschneiden und somit willkürlich zu herrschen. Die Täterschaft um den Reichstagsbrand regte Geschichtswissenschaftler bis heute zu heftigen Debatten an, wobei sich seit der Jahrhundertwende ein Standpunkt erhärtet. [...]
