Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Filmwissenschaft, Note: 1,3, Universität Bremen (Kulturwissenschaft), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Wie eine Art Warnung vor der gefühlskalten, eingefahrenen Lebensweise der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft lässt sich der Beitrag von Michael Haneke zu den Filmfestspielen in Cannes im Mai 1989 entschlüsseln. „Der siebente Kontinent“ ist sein erster Kinofilm und versetzt seine Zuschauer bei der Premiere im Plais du Festival gleichzeitig in Faszination und Entsetzen. Die vernichtende Beschreibung des gemeinsamen Selbstmordes einer Familie hinterlässt Spuren: „[...] hatte ich erstmals bei dieser Veranstaltung (und wie nur selten bei einem österreichischen Spielfim) den Eindruck, scharfes Denken und ungedämpfte Empfindungen mitzuerleben (Horwarth 1991, S. 11). Haneke beschreibt in seinem Film „Der siebente Kontinent“ die von ihm sogenannte „Vergletscherung“ der Gesellschaft. Damit versucht er auf die Probleme des Emotionsverlustes, der Mechanisierung und Funktionalisierung des Menschen hinzuweisen, welche in der postindustriellen Konsumgesellschaft immer mehr zum Alltag werden. Dabei bildet „Der siebente Kontinent“ den ersten Teil einer Trilogie, welche mit den Werken „Benny’s Video“ (1992) und „71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zufalls“ (1994) vervollständigt wird.

Existing critical traditions fail to fully account for the impact of Austrian director, and 2009 Cannes Palm d'Or winner, Michael Haneke's films, situated as they are between intellectual projects and popular entertainments. In this first English-language introduction to, and critical analysis of, his work, each of Haneke's eight feature films are considered in detail. Particular attention is given to what the author terms Michael Haneke's 'ethical cinema' and the unique impact of these films upon their audiences. Drawing on the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant and Stanley Cavell, Catherine Wheatley, introduces a new way of marrying film and moral philosophy, which explicitly examines the ethics of the film viewing experience. Haneke's films offer the viewer great freedom whilst simultaneously imposing a considerable burden of responsibility.
