Die vorliegende Schrift gibt, von ihrem Schlußkapitel abgesehen, den Inhalt von Vorlesungen wieder, die ich im Sommerhalbjahr 1921 in der Universität Berlin gehalten habe. In Antwort auf ein ohne mein Wissen aus akademischen Kreisen ergangenes Gesuch, mir das Vorlesen in der Universität zu ermöglichen, hatte das Ministerium mir das Halten von Gastvorlesungen freigestellt, und die Erlaubnis hieß für mich unter den gegebenen Verhältnissen das Pflichtgebot, von der Möglichkeit, zu Studierenden in den Räumen der alma mater zu sprechen, nun auch Gebrauch zu machen. Und zwar erschien es mir angezeigt, in einem Zeitpunkt, wo die große Partei des Sozialismus, der ich seit nun bald fünfzig Jahren angehöre, zu maßgebendem Einfluß im Republik gewordenen Reich gelangt ist, über die Streitfragen des Sozialismus in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart zu reden, das heißt die Meinungsverschiedenheiten zu kennzeichnen, die unter den Vertretern des Sozialismus über dessen Grundideen und deren Anwendung obwaltet haben und in einigen Fällen obwalten. Leider ist es mir jedoch nicht möglich gewesen, mehr als einen Teil der einschlägigen Fragen abzuhandeln. Meine außerordentlich knapp bemessene Zeit erlaubte mir nur eine Stunde in der Woche für diese Vorlesungen, und noch weniger als die akademische Stunde sich mit der astronomischen Stunde deckt, deckt sich das akademische Halbjahr mit dem Kalenderhalbjahr. So war ich genötigt, eine Auswahl zu treffen und manche Frage von Bedeutung, die mir am Herzen liegt, beiseite zu lassen. Indes glaube ich trotzdem in den Vorträgen genug des Wissenswerten über die Grundfragen des Sozialismus gesagt zu haben, um ihre Herausgabe als Schrift zu rechtfertigen.

This work traces the changes in classical Marxism (the Marxism of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels) that took place after the death of its founders. It outlines the variants that appeared around the turn of the twentieth century—one of which was to be of influence among the followers of Adolf Hitler, another of which was to shape the ideology of Benito Mussolini, and still another of which provided the doctrinal rationale for V. I. Lenin's Bolshevism and Joseph Stalin's communism. This account differs from many others by rejecting a traditional left/right distinction—a distinction that makes it difficult to understand how totalitarian political institutions could arise out of presumably diametrically opposed political ideologies. Marxism, Fascism, and Totalitarianism thus helps to explain the common features of "left-wing" and "right-wing" regimes in the twentieth century.

This book presents three later works by the German social-democratic thinker and politician Eduard Bernstein, translated into English in full for the first time: Social Democracy and International Politics: Social Democracy and the European Question; League of Nations or League of States; and International Law and International Politics: The Nature, Questions, and Future of International Law. Written at the height of WW1, they address the abrupt collapse of international socialist cooperation after its outbreak, and outline a vision for peace in Europe and beyond. Bernstein argues for an ethical, democratic approach to international relations, governed by a corpus of international law, and safeguarded by an international union dedicated to preserving peoples’ right to self-determination. He is sceptical of the state-centrism of early-20th-century liberal proposals for developing strong international institutions, while also deeply critical of militarist and imperialist political leaders and thinkers for preventing even these limited proposals from being realised.
