Es findet ein Bruch mit den traditionellen Subjekt- und Identitatssemantiken statt. Diese Zentralitat betrifft Foucaults Analyse von Subjektivierungsweisen in der Geschichte der Moderne, Lacans kulturtheoretische Psychoanalyse des Subjekts und Butlers Modell der Reproduktion und Subversion des Subjekts. Eine weitere zentrale Behauptung im Poststrukturalismus ist der "Tod des Subjekts." Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass das Subjekt ohne Ursprung und Einheit sei. Es sei ein "in der Sprache gefangenes und durch Sprache seiendes Wesen." (vgl. Moller) Der Subjektbegriff soll also vor dem Hintergrund der Annahme des "Tod des Subjekts" und der Auffassung der genannten Autoren, und somit Vertretern des Poststrukturalismus, untersucht werden. Der Begriff Poststrukturalismus umfasst mehrere geistes- und sozialwissenschaftliche Ansatze und Methoden, deren Ursprung in Frankreich der 1960er Jahre liegt. Der Poststrukturalismus beschreibt somit eine disparate, auf Axiomen des Strukturalismus aufbauende und diese gleichzeitig uberwindende Stromung. Diese Stromung teilt mit dem Strukturalismus die Auffassung, dass kulturelle Phanomene allgemein sprachlich strukturiert sind und eine arbitrare Beziehung zwischen Bezeichnung und Bezeichneten vorherrscht. Der Poststrukturalismus geht im Unterschied zum Strukturalismus allerdings von der Gleichrangigkeit der Ebenen des Signifikanten und des Signifikats aus. Der Sprecher bleibt auch hier unbedeutend.

In Feminism and the Abyss of Freedom, Linda M. G. Zerilli argues that the persistence of this subject-centered frame severely limits feminists' capacity to think imaginatively about the central problem of feminist theory and practice: a politics concerned with freedom. Offering both a discussion of feminism in its postmodern context and a critique of contemporary theory, Zerilli here challenges feminists to move away from a theory-based approach, which focuses on securing or contesting "women" as an analytic category of feminism, to one rooted in political action and judgment. She revisits the democratic problem of exclusion from participation in common affairs and elaborates a freedom-centered feminism as the political practice of beginning anew, world-building, and judging. In a series of case studies, Zerilli draws on the political thought of Hannah Arendt to articulate a nonsovereign conception of political freedom and to explore a variety of feminist understandings of freedom in the twentieth century, including ones proposed by Judith Butler, Monique Wittig, and the Milan Women's Bookstore Collective.
