Die Bücher des Autors unterscheiden sich von den meisten Veröffentlichungen über die Varusschlacht, dass er sich, statt dem Bericht Dios vom Marsch der Legionen in den Untergang zu folgen, auf die Berichte der Autoren Velleius Paterculus, Florus und Tacitus stützt. In dieser verbesserten Neuauflage analysiert er textkritisch die antiken Quellen über die Zeit 16 v.-16 n. Chr., untersucht sie auf Widersprüche, kontrolliert die aktuellen Ausgaben auf Abweichungen von den Originalen und stellt fest, dass die Berichte des Tacitus und Velleius Paterculus durch Missverständnisse, zahlreiche Übersetzungsfehler und mehrere Textmanipulationen zu Unrecht in Misskredit geraten sind. Zusätzlich beschäftigt sich der Autor mit der augusteischen Informationspolitik und kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass es sich bei der Darstellung des Schlachtgeschehens um eine Fälschung handelt, die Augustus, aus Angst, wie Cäsar zu sterben, bewusst veranlasste. Durch eine exakte Verfolgung der Feldzüge des Drusus, Tiberius, Varus und Germanicus gelingt es ihm, das Lager Aliso zu lokalisieren und den Verlauf und den Zeitpunkt des germanischen Überfalls auf das Sommerlager des Varus aufzuzeigen. Nach aufwendigen Untersuchungen, mittels verschiedener Messtechniken, kann er seine Thesen erhärten und nachvollziehbar schildern, wie sich der Überfall im Einzelnen abgespielt hat. Als Bestätigung seiner Analyse fasst er die kürzlich entzifferte Bleimarke auf, die bereits 15 v. Chr. Varus als Unterfeldherr in Germanien und L. Caedicius als Zenturio der ersten Kohorte der XIX. Legion bezeichnet. Dieser Caedicius, der bisher als Verteidiger Alisos erwähnt wird, hat somit den Überfall mit Teilen seiner XIX. Legion überlebt. Weil jetzt die drei Lagerpräfekten (Caedicius, Eggius und Ceionius) bekannt sind, ist das ein weiteres Argument gegen die Lehrmeinung vom Schlachtgeschehen nach Cassius Dio. Abschließend gibt der Autor eine Gegenüberstellung der deutschen mit der angelsächsischen Geschichtsschreibung und weist darauf hin, dass die Schilderung der brutalen Machtergreifung des jungen Octavian von deutschen Historikern zu moderat, die Bewertung des alternden Augustus zu kritisch, der Bericht des Velleius Paterculus zu wohlwollend sowie die Kritik des Tacitus am Prinzipat des Augustus zu feindselig beurteilt werden. Er schließt sich deshalb dem Urteil Symes und Golo Manns an, die Tacitus nach Jahrhunderten der Verleumdung als bedeutenden Chronisten der Römischen Kaiserzeit rehabilitierten.
