Historisch-systematische Rekonstruktion eines Begriffs“, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Was ist der Tod? Wir wissen vom Tod nur durch unsere Erfahrung. Der Tod ist ein Ereignis, das uns stets überwältigt und das meist ungewollt von außen in unsere Existenz tritt und diese abrupt beendet. Aufgrund dieses empririschen Charakters ist der Tod daher anscheinend nichts, was sich bereits rein gedanklich er- und damit zuletzt abschließen ließe, denn dann könnten wir, wenn uns danach ist und wenn es unsere Fähigkeiten der Erkenntnis von etwas nicht überschreitet, es so einrichten, seine Realität am Ende vollkommen zu vermeiden. Ein Denken nach diesem Muster, das sowohl eine gelebte (Todes-)Erfahrung als auch die eigene Existenz vollkommen zu vergessen gewohnt ist, ist, Kierkegaard folgend, abstraktes Denken, wobei die Abstraktion vor allem darin besteht, dass sie den jeweils Denkenden außer Betracht zieht; ein Denken also „bei dem es keinen Denkenden gibt“. Dem setzt Kierkegaard im Gegenzug ein existenzielles Denken gegenüber; ein Denken, „bei dem es einen Denkenden gibt“ und „bei dem die Existenz dem existierenden Denker den Gedanken, Zeit und Raum gibt“. In dieser Arbeit soll es darum gehen, welche Gestalt und vor allem welche Bedeutung der Tod dem Menschen gegenüber in Kierkegaards Denken einnimmt. Wie sich zeigen wird, erreicht dabei die Reflexion über den Tod bei ihm im Gegensatz zu Denkern vor ihm eine neuartige Qualität, die später Eingang in die Existenzphilosophie (insbesondere bei Martin Heidegger) finden wird. Es wird sich außerdem zeigen, welche vergleichsweise extrem individualisierte Position Kierkegaard zu dieser Sache vertritt. Während noch bei Fichte und Feuerbach das Ich und das Subjekt etwas allgemeines war tritt bei Kierkegaard der Einzelne und mit ihm die je ganz eigene Verantwortlichkeit und Selbstbestimmung so sehr in den Vordergrund wie nie zuvor. Als Leitfaden zu seinem Denken über den Tod wird hier seine fiktive Rede „An einem Grabe“ dienen, die zu den „Drei Reden bei gedachten Gelegenheiten“ aus dem Jahre 1845 gehören.

What relation is there between the existence of a work of art and that of a living being? Between the existence of an atom and that of a value like solidarity? These questions become our own each time a reality—whether it is a piece of music, someone we love, or a fictional character—is established and begins to take on an importance in our lives. Like William James or Gilles Deleuze, Souriau methodically defends the thesis of an existential pluralism. There are indeed different manners of existing and even different degrees or intensities of existence: from pure phenomena to objectivized things, by way of the virtual and the “super-existent,” to which works of art and the intellect, and even morality, bear witness. Existence is polyphonic, and, as a result, the world is considerably enriched and enlarged. Hannah Arendt was born in Germany in 1906 and lived in America from 1941 until her death in 1975. Thus her life spanned the tumultuous years of the twentieth century, as did her thought. She did not consider herself a philosopher, though she studied and maintained close relationships with two great philosophers—Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger—throughout their lives. She was a thinker, in search not of metaphysical truth but of the meaning of appearances and events. She was a questioner rather than an answerer, and she wrote what she thought, principally to encourage others to think for themselves. Fearless of the consequences of thinking, Arendt found courage woven in each and every strand of human freedom.
