Der Tod Jesu wird im Johannesevangelium in diskursiven wie narrativen Texten thematisiert. Die Arbeit geht im Anschluss an Joh 14,29 davon aus, dass die erste Abschiedsrede (13,31-14,31) mit ihrer Eschatologie und Pneumatologie, aber auch der angekündigten Konfrontation Jesu mit dem Teufel der Schlüssel- und Kommentartext für den Passions- und Osterbericht (Joh 18-20) ist. Zur Erhebung des theologischen Verständnisses vom Tod Jesu werden beide Textcorpora detailliert und in ihren gegenseitigen Bezügen in synchroner wie diachroner Hinsicht analysiert.

Aus der Wunde rinnen Blut und Wasser, deren Deutung vielseitig ist. Sie reicht "von der Auffassung, da die Szene nur die Tatsache des Todes Jesu, vielleicht in Abwehr einer doketischen Irrlehre, feststellen soll, bis zu theologischen Interpretationen, da aus der Seite Jesu die Kirche, der Strom des Lebens oder die Sakramente von Taufe und Eucharistie hervorgegangen sind." Dabei ist zu beachten, dass die Historizit t des Abschnittes strittig ist - schon deshalb, weil er den synoptischen Evangelien unbekannt ist. M glicherweise handelt es sich um die johanneische Variante des markinischen Hauptmannes, der unter dem Kreuz Jesum als den Gottessohn bekennt (Mk 15,39). Die Ankl nge sind jedoch sehr vage. So kann nicht ausgeschlossen werden, dass "Johannes ein Ereignis einfach wegen seiner allegorischen Bedeutung konstruierte." Die Untersuchung des Textes orientiert sich zun chst an den exegetischen Schritten der Textkritik, Literarkritik, Formgeschichte und der Redaktionsgeschichte. Darauf folgen Einzelanmerkungen, die den Text als Einheit betrachten. Abschlie end werden kurz einige weitere Abschnitte des Johannesevangeliums interpretiert, die sich mit der Deutung des Todes Jesu auseinandersetzen.

How do the Gospel and Epistles of John depict the death of Jesus, and why do they do so in the way that they do ? The argument of this study is that there is a diversity of theological perspectives on Jesus' death in the Johannine Corpus and that at least some of that diversity can be elucidated with reference to the changing Sitze im Leben of the Johannine community. This book thus attempts to correlate Johannine theology with Johannine history, building on the earlier labors of Raymond E. Brown and J. Louis Martyn in particular. Part One assesses recent trends in Johannine scholarship and gives a fresh account of the history of Johannine Christianity and of its literary legacy. Part Two then investigates Jesus' death in the Gospel and Epistles of John, attempting to understand and to explain the diversity of Johannine theological perspectives with reference to historical developments and sociological realities. Focal point of discussion and analysis are Johannine passages which relate Jesus' death to the fulfillment of Scripture (e.g. John 12:37-39, 19:24, 36-37), to his departure or going away (e.g., 14:2-3), to his exaltation and glorification (e.g. 3:14, 8:28, 12:32-34; 13:31), and to the language of flesh, blood and water (John 6:51-56; 13:1-20; 19:34; I John I:7; 4:2; 5:6-8; 2 John 7).

English summary: Some exegetes claim that Jesus' death in the Fourth Gospel does not have any theological significance, whereas other believe that there is a theology of the cross in the Fourth Gospel. In view of this situation, Jesper Tang Nielsen attempts to define the narrative structures of the Fourth Gospel. On the basis of a semiotic interpretation of Aristotle's Poetics, he distinguishes between the cognitive and the pragmatic dimension of the narrative. He shows that the significance of Jesus' death is primarily in the cognitive dimension. It is the essential prerequisite for the final recognition of the Son of God. Against this background, it can also be seen as the reason for the gathering of the community of believers and as the source of their cult. Thus the death of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel is neither insignificant, nor does it comply with traditional theological categories. German description: Einige Exegeten behaupten, dass der Tod Jesu im Johannesevangelium bedeutungslos ist. Andere meinen, dass das Johannesevangelium eine Kreuzestheologie vertritt. Angesichts dieser Forschungssituation unternimmt Jesper Tang Nielsen den Versuch, die Funktion des Todes in den narrativen Strukturen des Vierten Evangeliums zu bestimmen. Most interpreters of 1, 2, 3 John believe that the author's opponents (called "antichrists", "deceivers", and "false prophets") advocated gnostic or progressive doctrines that denied or downplayed the humanity of Jesus Christ and the importance of ethical behaviour, and eventually split the Johannine community. Against this consensus, Streett argues that the opponents are former Jewish-Christians who have left the community to return to the synagogue after renouncing their belief that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah.
