Allerdings dominieren häufig die Konflikte: Väter fehlen, Mütter sterben, Geschwister kommen sich zu nahe und Töchter werden missbraucht. Die Missbrauchsthematik ist in mittelalterlicher Literatur häufig mit dem Inzest verbunden. Er gehört zu den dunklen Seiten der Mediävistik und regt dazu an, sich mit "etwas Abseitigem, ja vielleicht sogar Abgründigem, [...] Rätselhaften, etwas bislang unentdeckt oder unbeachtet Gebliebenem auf dem Gebiet der Mediävistik, der Mittelalter-Forschung und angrenzenden Feldern" zu beschäftigen. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich im ersten Teil mit einer theoretischen Aufarbeitung dieser Thematik, um so eine Grundlage zu schaffen, um sich im zweiten Schritt mit einer genauen Untersuchung der Inzestepisode in Heinrich von Neustadts " Apollonius von Tyrland "zu beschäftigen. Die heute "vielfach soziobiologisch begründete Ablehnung des Inzests war im Bewusstsein der Menschen des 15. Jahrhunderts tief verankert. Alte Erzählungen warnten zwar stets vor inzestuösem Verhalten, dennoch waren Inzestgeschichten Forschungsgegenstand der Gebildeten zu jener Zeit. Der Humanist und Bamberger Domherr ALBRECHT VON EYB erzählt am Ende seines 1472 geschriebenen Traktats eine abschreckende Geschichte, welche vom Vater-Tochter-Inzest handelt. Dabei zeugt ein mächtiger Kaiser mit seiner Tochter einen Sohn, namens Albanus, der wiederum Jahre später seine eigene Mutter zur Frau nimmt.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Ältere Deutsche Literatur, Mediävistik, Note: 2, Universität Wien (Germanistik), Veranstaltung: Inzest in mittelalterlichen Erzählungen, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Zuge des Seminars Inzest in mittelalterlichen Erzählungen befasste ich mich mit dem der Mehrheit unbekannten Roman Heinrichs von Neustadt Apollonius von Tyrland, der im 14. Jahrhundert entstanden ist. Trotz seiner raffinierten Konzeption und abenteuerlichen Geschehnisse, schaffte es dieses Werk dennoch nicht in den gängigen Kanon älterer Literatur der Germanistik. Womöglich liegt dies auch an der abschreckenden Versanzahl der Dichtung, denn mit 20644 Versen kann man Apollonius zu den umfangreichsten Werken seiner Zeit zählen. Nachdem der Autor vorgestellt wird, soll ein möglichst kurzer Inhaltsüberblick gegeben werden, wobei das Wörtchen kurz hier die größte Herausforderung darstellen wird, da in dieser Erzählung unglaublich viel passiert, unendlich viele Abenteuer zu bestehen sind. Auch das Stichwort Aufbau ist ein wichtiges, da sich hier herausstellen wird, warum es in dieser Arbeit um Apollonius ́ Frauen geht; denn es sind ebendiese, die das Leben bzw. das Schicksal des tapferen Ritters bestimmen und strukturieren. In diesem Zusammenhang ist auch das Thema Quellen von Bedeutung, denn Heinrich von Neustadt ist nicht Apollonius ́ Erfinder, auch wenn er seine lateinische Quelle um das Vierfache erweitert hat. Wenn man Apollonius von Tyrland im Kontext des Inzest liest, könnte man, vor allem nachdem man Sophokles ́ König Ödipus oder Hartmanns von Aue Gregorius rezipiert hat, nach der Lektüre beinahe etwas enttäuscht sein, denn das Inzestmotiv kommt nur zu Beginn der Erzählung wirklich zum Vorschein, während es später nur zu Situationen kommt, in denen dieser theoretisch möglich werden könnte, die Rede ist von Inzestgefahr. Und dies führt uns nun zum Hauptthema der Arbeit: den Frauen. Wie bereits erwähnt, ist Apollonius ́ Schicksal von vielen Frauen geprägt und bei dem Versuch die Erzählung zu strukturieren, bleibt einem eigentlich nichts anderes übrig, als sein Leben nach den Begegnungen und Wiederbegegnungen mit seinen Frauen einzuteilen.

An examination of the ways in which late medieval lyric poetry can be seen to engage with contemporary medical theory. This book argues that late medieval love poets, from Petrarch to Machaut and Charles d'Orléans, exploit scientific models as a broad framework within which to redefine the limits of the lyric subject and his body. Just as humoraltheory depends upon principles of likes and contraries in order to heal, poetry makes possible a parallel therapeutic system in which verbal oppositions and substitutions counter or rewrite received medical wisdom. The specific case of blindness, a disability that according to the theories of love that predominated in the late medieval West foreclosed the possibility of love, serves as a laboratory in which to explore poets' circumvention of the logical limits of contemporary medical theory. Reclaiming the power of remedy from physicians, these late medieval French and Italian poets prompt us to rethink not only the relationship between scientific and literary authority at the close of the middle ages, but, more broadly speaking, the very notion of therapy. Beyond the boundaries of the known Christian world during the Middle Ages, there were alien cultures that intrigued, puzzled, and sometimes frightened the people of Europe. The reports of travelers in Africa and Asia revealed that "monstrous" races of men lived there, whose appearance and customs were quite different from the European norm. This book examines the impact of these races upon Western art, literature, and philosophy, from their earliest mention until the age of exploration. Friedman furnishes a descriptive catalog of the races, most of which were real, geographically remote peoples, some of which were fabled creatures that served as symbols. He traces the evolution of European attitudes toward them, with particular emphasis on the high Middle Ages, when they seem most strongly to have captured the Western imagination. Ranging through literature, the arts, cartography, canon law, and theology, he considers the widely varying ways in which Christians viewed and depicted strange races of men. Finally, he examines transformations in European consciousness brought about by the discoveries of the exotic peoples of the Americas.
