Adolescence is a phase of transition, change and upheaval. These processes are often translated into movements through space in literary representations. The narrated space is to be read in its construction and semantics as a complex symbol carrier that is able to connect different dimensions with one another. The study develops, with reference to cultural-scientific spatial theories, a methodical model to analyze current youth novels from a topographical perspective and thus to discuss the interweaving of space, movement and growing up. In the cultural studies and narratological view of (narrative) spaces of adolescence, new trends and developments in youth literature after 2000 manifest themselves. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Räume der Adoleszenz by Anna Stemmann, published by J.B. Metzler, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Recognizable, recurring spatial settings in video games serve not only as points of reference and signposts for orientation, but also as implicit sources of content. These spatial archetypes denote more than real-world objects or settings: they suggest and bring forward emotional states, historical context, atmospheric “attunement,” in the words of Massumi, and aesthetic programs that go beyond plain semiotic reference. In each chapter, Mathias Fuchs brings to the fore an archetype commonly found in old and new digital games: The Ruin, The Cave, The Cloud, The Portal, The Road, The Forest, and The Island are each analysed at length, through the perspectives of aesthetics, games technology, psychoanalysis, and intertextuality. Wie erzählen Menschen über ihr Leben und wie geben sie der Erzählung ihrer Biographie Bedeutung? Traditionellerweise hat die Autobiographieforschung dies mit dem Verweis auf die zeitliche Strukturierung der erlebten Ereignisse beantwortet. Die Autobiographie wurde so als chronologisch- linear angelegte Erzählform definiert. Hier setzt die vorliegende Studie an. Sie rückt die bislang kaum beachtete räumliche Dimension autobiographischer Texte ins Zentrum. Autobiographische Räume und Orte erscheinen unter dieser Perspektive als Schnittstellen von Individuum und Kultur. Sie sind zwar immer schon kulturell vorgeprägt, werden in der autobiographischen Narration jedoch stets aufs Neue konstruiert und modifiziert.
