Erstmals wird die Landschaftsdarstellung des Donaustils auf formaler und inhaltlicher Ebene mit besonderer Berucksichtigung des Motivs des cisalpinen Waldes umfassend analysiert und der sympathetischen Landschaft zugeordnet. Die einfuhrende kritische Literaturdiskussion beobachtet ferner, dass die ursprungliche Benennung als Donaustil sehr bald in Anbetracht des wachsenden Werkmaterials zu Donauschule modifiziert wurde. Diese zweite, als Schule unzutreffende Bezeichnung burgerte sich in der kunstwissenschaftlichen Literatur ein. Es erfolgen aus diesem Grund die Hinterfragung des Stilbegriffes und der Versuch einer Neubenennung. Der Stilname Strukturismus wird aufgrund der eigenwertigen Bildstruktur vorgeschlagen. Ein weiterer Abschnitt beschreibt die Geschichte der Walddarstellung europaweit und speziell die Bild- und Literaturgeschichte des cisalpinen Waldes. Die einzelnen Bildinhalte werden mit der Philosophie und der Literatur des deutschen Humanismus verknupft. Das literarische Werk des Hans Sachs (1494-1576) vertritt eine mit den Werken des Donaustils gut vergleichbare Landschaftsschilderung. Der literaturwissenschaftliche Begriff der Bedeutungslandschaft wird mit dem kunstwissenschaftlichen Begriff der sympathetischen Landschaft gekoppelt. Das Sonderthema Wald steht fur ein erwachendes Bewusstsein der Individualitat und der regionalen Geschichte, erwachst aber auch zum Gegenbild der stagnierenden, fremd beeinflussten Kulturbereiche und des Verfalls des Institutionellen. In ganz bestimmten Fallen verband sich mit der Darstellung des Waldes auch reformatorisches Gedankengut. Die umfangreichen Werkanalysen liefern auf dem unterschiedlich stabilen Fundament der bisherigen Forschung neue Beitrage. Ferner wird die kurzzeitig sehr ahnliche Entwicklungsstufe der Landschaftsmalerei der oberitalienischen Kunst im ersten Jahrzehnt des 16. Jahrhunderts in Auswertung der drei entscheidenden Ausstellungen Renaissance Venice 1999, Van Eyck und seine Zeit 2002 und Giorgione 2004 mit markanten Beispielen hinsichtlich Donaustil zur Diskussion gebracht. In diesem umfassenden Kontext konnen zahlreiche neue Aspekte zum Thema Wald im Donaustil gewonnen werden.

Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Untersuchung steht das in der mittelalterlichen Literatur häufig anzutreffende Phänomen des Wilden, das dem Helden in ganz unterschiedlicher narrativer Ausgestaltung begegnen kann: So gehören neben wilden Tieren und wilder Natur auch die Wildleute des Mittelalters zu dem Motivkreis, der gemeinhin als das Andere der höfischen Kultur verstanden wird. Entgegen dieser einseitigen Lesart geht die Autorin an den Beispielen des Parzival, Busant und Wolfdietrich D den jeweiligen textuellen Repräsentationen des Wilden auf unterschiedlichen narrativen Ebenen nach und zeigt dabei, dass das Wilde keinesfalls nur als Gegenentwurf des in der Literatur inszenierten höfischen Selbstverständnisses in Erscheinung tritt. Vielmehr figurieren die vielfältigen Manifestationen des Wilden als anthropologische Konstante, was anhand kulturanthropologisch signifikanter Kategorien wie ‚Kleidung‘, ‚Essen‘oder ‚Sexualität‘ exemplarisch untersucht wird. Das Wilde ‐ so die These ‐ wird in den Texten unabhängig von ihrer jeweiligen Gattungszugehörigkeit als Konstituens des Menschseins inszeniert und tritt damit in ein komplexes Spannungsverhältnis mit den Eckpfeilern der höfischen Kultur. Dass die Differenzkategorien wilde/zam nicht absolut gesetzt sind, lässt sich darüber hinaus auch auf der poetologischen Ebene beobachten. Insbesondere der Parzival-Dichter Wolfram von Eschenbach erhebt wildekeit zum Erzählprinzip, dem die Studie anhand verschiedener Aspekte der Narration (z.B. Figurenkonzeption, Erzähltechnik und Metaphorik) nachgeht und so Strategien des „wilden Erzählens“ herausarbeitet.
