Lei è Alja Kagan, conosciuta in arte come Elsa Triolet (nonché sorella di Lili Brik, amante e musa di Majakovskij). Lui è Viktor Šklovskij, iniziatore del Formalismo russo insieme all’amico Roman Jakobson. Si incontrano in una città i cui bar sono zeppi di russi coi pantaloni senza piega. Parlano a voce troppo alta o non parlano affatto. Poeti affamati, narratori sradicati, ubriaconi tristi o molesti... Fra loro c’è anche Boris Pasternak. Chi più chi meno, soffrono la condizione degradante dell’esilio, hanno nostalgia di casa. Li riconosci perché tra loro discorrono di rivoluzione, guerra, paura, letteratura e donne. Vivono vicino allo Zoo, e ogni volta che mettono piede fuori casa non possono evitare di gettare un occhio alle scimmie con commiserazione fraterna. In un geniale esperimento di scomposizione del romanzo a intreccio e del genere epistolare, Šklovskij gioca a confondere amabilmente il lettore nella sua percezione degli elementi di realtà e finzione, opera e vita, componendo l’intera narrazione su stranianti digressioni: arte e motori, amici e detrattori, case editrici e camere d’affitto… Laddove ogni argomento, compreso il tempo atmosferico, si fa metafora di quel doloroso tabù che è l’amore non corrisposto.
