Die vorliegende Arbeit vergleicht die Dramen ‘Don Juan kommt aus dem Krieg’ von Ödön von Horváth und ‘Don Juan oder die Liebe zur Geometrie’ von Max Frisch als Variationen der literarischen Figur, wie sie die europäische Literatur seit Tirso de Molina kennt. Sie möchte die These belegen, dass beide Dramen in ihren Variationen des literarischen Stoffes die Erwartungen, die der Name Don Juan hervorruft, nicht erfüllen. Horváth und Frisch spiegeln in Don Juan ihre eigene Zeit, sie gestalten die eigenen Themen und Gegenwartserfahrungen literarisch. Im Vordergrund der Arbeit steht ein inhaltlicher Motivvergleich, der die Entwicklung Don Juans, sein Verhältnis zu den Frauen und zur Liebe sowie sein Verhältnis zur Religion behandelt. Er richtet sich auf die Verfremdungen, die beide Dramen prägen, und schließt mit einer kurzen Einordnung in das Werk der Autoren, durch die sie in den Kontext ihrer wesentlichen Themen gestellt werden.

Das Motiv des skrupellosen Verführers war schon lange in der Literatur ein beliebtes Thema, das jedoch Fray Gabriel Téllez, der unter dem Pseudonym Tirso de Molina schrieb, das erste Mal in seinem Drama El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de piedra verarbeitete. Uraufgeführt wurde es 1624 in Madrid und gehört heute zu den bedeutendsten Versionen des Don-Juan-Stoffes. Tirso läßt nämlich in seinem Drama den Verführer Don Juan, der gewissenlos Damen jeglichen Standes entehrt und Männer tötet, letztendlich von einem steinernen Standbild, das ein von ihm ermordetes Opfer darstellt und von Gott geschickt ist, in die Hölle hinunterziehen. So werden in dieser Version Don Juans Greueltaten durch die göttliche Gewalt gerächt. Tirsos Drama gilt als die Urversion des Don-Juan-Stoffes, die seitdem noch mehr als 450 mal auf internationalem Raum verarbeitet wurde, wobei im Weiteren auf zwei Beispiele der Autoren José Zorrilla und Max Frisch genauer durch einen Vergleich der beiden Hauptfiguren eingegangen werden wird. For sociologist Henning Bech, the image of the male homosexual has become emblematic of the modern urban condition, in which freedom and mobility contend with transience and superficiality, in which possibility, energy, and engagement vie with uncertainty and restlessness. In this powerful and frankly provocative critique, Bech skillfully examines the distinctive relationship between urban modernism and the gay experience, exploring in compelling fashion its growing ramifications for the cultural mainstream. Gay society has persevered, even flourished, in this highly charged urban environment, aestheticizing and sexualizing the spaces, both public and private, where men meet. With profound insight and honesty, Bech details this world, candidly reflecting on sex, friendship, love, and life as manifest in the homosexual form of existence. He convincingly demonstrates that, in the face of modern alienation, successful coping strategies developed by gay men are gradually being adopted by mainstream heterosexual society. These adaptations are often masked by what Bech calls an "absent homosexuality, " in which sublimated themes of homosexuality and masculine love surface, only to be disavowed in expressions of social anxiety.
