English summary: With this work, Otto Kaiser presents the Tria Corda lectures on the three topics of destiny and freedom and divine providence as well as the beauty and harmony in the world and the problem of the existence of evil. In doing so, he shows how the Jewish wise man Jesus Sirach succeeded in putting the substance of biblical faith into a larger context and maintaining its identity at the same time. Since each of the subjects dealt with are timeless fundamental issues of the way humans see themselves and the world, it is not only specialists in Hellenistic philosophy and Judaism who will benefit from reading this book, but also a larger readership. German description: Die Weisheit des Jesus Sirach verdient schon deshalb ein besonderes Interesse, weil sich in ihr die Antwort eines gebildeten Juden auf die Begegnung mit der hellenistischen und zumal der stoischen Philosophie spiegelt. Hiermit liegt die bearbeitete Fassung der in Jena gehaltenen Tria Corda Vorlesungen des seit Jahrzehnten auf diesem Feld arbeitenden Marburger Alttestamentlers Otto Kaiser vor. Er stellt die drei Themenkreise der Schicksalsbestimmung und Freiheit, der gottlichen Vorsehung sowie der Schonheit und Harmonie der Welt und des Problems der Existenz der Ubel und des Bosen dar. Dabei zeigt er, wie es dem judischen Weisheitslehrer Jesus Sirach gelungen ist, in Anknupfung und Widerspruch die Eigenart des biblischen Glaubens in einen weiteren Horizont zu stellen und zugleich seine Substanz zu bewahren. Der letzte Beitrag macht einen Sprung um zweihundert Jahre. Otto Kaiser untersucht unter demselben Gesichtspunkt den Umgang des Romers Cicero und des Juden Philo mit den fur das ethische Denken der Stoiker zentralen Paradoxien. Da es sich bei jedem der hier behandelten Themen um zeitubergreifende Grundsatzfragen des menschlichen Welt- und Selbstverstandnisses handelt, werden nicht nur Spezialisten fur hellenistische Philosophie und Judentum, sondern auch ein breiterer Leserkreis angesprochen.

Despite the attention that has already been paid to the theme of creation in the book of Sirach, scholarship has yet to provide a comprehensive analysis of Ben Sira's instruction regarding the cosmic order and its role in the divine bestowal of wisdom upon human beings. This book, which consists of two parts, fills a lacuna in scholarship by offering such an analysis. The first part of this study examines Ben Sira's three main treatments of the created world, thus providing a comprehensive description and synthesis of Ben Sira's doctrine concerning the created order of the cosmos. The second part of this work analyzes the place of human beings in general, and the Jewish people in particular, within the cosmic order. This second part includes an analysis of the role of the created order in Ben Sira's wisdom instruction in 1:1-10 and 24:1-34 as well as an elucidation of the way in which his treatments of various kinds of people—civic leaders, wives, doctors, manual laborers, scribes, and cultic personnel—are integral to Ben Sira's doctrine of creation. This study demonstrates that the created order is a fundamental category that Ben Sira relies upon in articulating his instructions about wisdom and wise behavior.

Buss describes the dynamics of human life that are encouraged in the Bible and how biblical guidance compares with other religious traditions. The dynamics include both receptivity (“from” another) and power (“for” or “over” another), often in combination (“with” another). For example, love joins receptive cognition of worth with energetic support. Receptivity, the only way to deal with fundamental values, seeks material and religious benefits and is the human side of revelation and salvation. Public acknowledgement strengthens divine influence. Furthermore, receptivity accepts challenges. These include individual and social growth and semi-identification with others, which has societal rather than concrete individual consequences. Power is crucial in legal remedies and penalties.
