El presente libro tiene como finalidad analizar una de las facetas investigativas de la agricultura contemporánea menos exploradas, como es la agricultura familiar, en el caso particular de la producción cacaotera de los cultivadores agremiados en asociaciones campesinas de la provincia de Occidente de Boyacá. Como es sabido, en el pasado reciente los pequeños agricultores de esta provincia fueron azotados por una despiadada violencia, originada en los conflictos asociados con los cultivos ilícitos y la explotación de esmeraldas, que dejaron profundas huellas en su tejido social y económico. Por ello, la necesidad de fortalecer los lazos solidarios entre los cultivadores de cacao, los convirtió en sujetos del desarrollo local y los condujo a forjar iniciativas asociativas, que han cimentado el capital social campesino. Lo anterior se puede apreciar en los tres capítulos que integran este libro, que se refieren, en su orden, a la agricultura familiar y las relaciones laborales, la asociatividad en el sector cacaotero de la provincia de Occidente de Boyacá y la economía solidaria como espacio de desarrollo, integración y cooperación. Abstract The purpose of this book is to analyze one of the least explored investigative facets of contemporary agriculture, such as family farming, in the particular case of cocoa production by growers unionized in peasant associations in western Boyacá. In the recent past, small farmers of this province were plagued by ruthless violence originated in the conflicts related to illicit crops and emeralds exploitation, that left deep social and economic footprints. Therefore, the need to strengthen solidarity ties between cocoa growers made them subjects of local development, and led them to forge associative initiatives which have cemented the social capital in this community. These topics are explained in the three chapters of this book which focus on family farming and labor relations, associativity in the cocoa sector of the province of Western Boyacá, and solidarity economy as a space for development, integration, and cooperation.
