Lejos de la epopeya que desde siempre nos han enseñado entre aulas y conmemoraciones, las independencias hispanoamericanas no necesariamente representaron el surgimiento esperado y justo de la nación. En el caso venezolano, el proceso que dio cuenta del colapso del orden colonial y condujo a una forma republicana de existencia, fue dramático y violento, con mayor énfasis en sus primeros años. Esta investigación se aproxima a esos acontecimientos sosteniendo que lo sucedido por entonces forma parte indefectible de la dinámica de la sociedad colonial y del cese de su eficacia, oponiéndose al relato nacionalista que continúa viendo en ello el advenimiento de libertades e igualdades. El trabajo se despliega sobre un planteamiento analítico decisivo: antes que un efecto de la modernidad, la independencia fue un proceso histórico y social propio de los contextos donde tuvo lugar, y en ello se detiene el estudio al tratar el caso venezolano.

É um ensaio histórico-sociológico que pretende colocar na mesa dos debates uma tese sobre o lugar e o papel da mineração moderno-colonial na posterior configuração do projeto civilizatório hegemônico, que dá forma à vida social contemporânea. Nossa tese afirma, de maneira simples, que a mineração moderno-colonial foi o detonante fundamental do Capitaloceno. Aqui se procura demonstrar como esse tipo histórico de exploração das "riquezas" minerais da Terra, nascido do empreendimento da invasão e da conquista colonial do "Novo Mundo", desencadeou e motorizou toda uma série de grandes deslocamentos geológicos e antropológicos que desembocaram na grande crise ecológico-civilizatória que hoje paira sobre nossa Mãe Terra e, especificamente, sobre nossa comunidade biológica, os humanos. A invasão, conquista e colonização — primeiro, da América e, logo, do mundo inteiro — tiveram na sede pelo ouro a força motriz e o sentido-mor de sua existência, e na eficácia letal do chumbo e do ferro, o meio indispensável de sua realização. Essa perversa liga de metais — a violência a serviço da cobiça — é o que, em definitivo, desde o século XVI, forja as bases materiais e simbólicas do regime de dominação hegemônico moderno. [...] Desde que a primeira edição deste livro foi publicada, em 2013, uma grande quantidade de acontecimentos se deu no panorama da mineração transnacional na América Latina. Fatos não apenas importantes e graves, mas fatos no sentido de toda a densidade política que esse termo expressa. É o caso evidente do incomensurável crime massivo da Samarco no Vale do Rio Doce, no Brasil. E de crimes dirigidos a pessoas, como o assassinato de Berta Cáceres e a tentativa contra Gustavo Castro Soto, em Honduras; ou o assédio e a perseguição policial-judicial a Máxima Acuña, no Peru. Houve ainda mortos e feridos "ao acaso", como nas violentas repressões das greves contra a mineradora Tintaya Marquiri, no Peru. Eu poderia mencionar os sucessivos vazamentos de milhões de litros de água cianetada pela Barrick Gold, em San Juan, no leste da Argentina; os quarenta mil litros de ácido sulfúrico nos rios Baranuchi e Sonora, no México; a contaminação dos mananciais que abastecem a população de Santo Antônio do Grama, em Minas Gerais, pela ruptura de um mineroduto da Anglo American; e tantos outros crimes contra a natureza que, no jargão mineiro, são apresentados como "acidentes". [...] Assim, na atualidade como na origem, a mineração — a mineração colonial moderna — segue como a veia aberta mais lacerante e sangrenta, em nossa entidade histórico-geopolítica chamada de "América Latina", mas também para além, em todo o Sul global. Esta história é uma história escrita por rastros cada vez maiores de sangue. Seus grandes feitos vão de massacre em massacre. Costa Rica Before Coffee centers on the decade of the 1840s, when the impact of coffee and export agriculture began to revolutionize Costa Rican society. Lowell Gudmundson focuses on the nature of the society prior to the coffee boom, but he also makes observations on the entire sweep of Costa Rican history, from earliest colonial times to the present, and in his final chapter compares the country's development and agrarian structures with those of other Latin American nations. These wide-ranging applications follow inevitably, since the author convincingly portrays the 1840s as they key decade in any interpretation of Costa Rican history.Gudmundson synthesizes and questions the existing historical literature on Costa Rica, relegating much of it to the realm of myth. He attacks what he calls the rural democratic myth (or rural egalitarian model) of Costa Rica's past, a myth that he argues has pervaded the country's historiography and politics and has had a huge impact on its image abroad and on its citizens' self-image. The rural democratic myth paints a rather idyllic picture of the country's past. It holds that prior to the coffee boom, the vast majority of Costa Rica's population was made up of peasants who owned small farms and were largely self-sufficient. These peasants enjoyed a high degree of social and economic quality; there were no important social distinctions and little division of labor. According to the myth, the primary source of this relatively egalitarian social order was the period of colonial rule, which ended in 1821. The new developments wrought by coffee and agrarian capitalism are seen as destructive of this rural democracy and as leading directly to unprecedented social problems that arose as a result of division of labor, rapid population growth, and widespread class antagonism.Gudmundson rejects virtually all of the components of this rural egalitarian model for pre-coffee society and reinterprets the early impact of coffee. He uses an array of sources, including census records, notary archives, and probate inventories, many of them previously unknown or unused, to analyze the country's social hierarchy, the division of labor, the distribution of wealth, various forms of private and communal land tenure, differentiation between cities and villages, household and family structure, and the elite before and after the rise of coffee. His powerful conclusion is that rather than reflecting the complexities of Costa Rican history, the rural egalitarian model is largely a construct of coffee culture itself, used to support the order that supplanted the colonial regime. Gudmundson ultimately reveals that the conceptual framework of the rural democratic myth has been limiting both to is supporters and to its opponents. Costa Rica Before Coffee proposes an alternative to the myth, on that emphasizes the complexity of agrarian history and breaks important new ground.
