Eneas Silvio Piccolomini (1405-1464), más conocido por Pio II, nombre que adoptó cuando alcanzó el papado en 1461, fue además de papa, un gran humanista como se refleja a través de las obras que nos ha dejado. Una de ellas, Historia rerum ubique gestarum, consistía en una especie de enciclopedia histórico geográfica que debía de recoger lo que hasta entonces se conocía del mundo. Este ambicioso proyecto, que no pudo completar a causa de su fallecimiento, se conserva solo una parte completa y no en su totalidad, dedicada al mítico, misterioso y rico continente asiático. En este libro se presenta una edición crítica de Asia, precedido de una introducción con una breve reseña de la vida de Pio II, con un esbozo del contexto político e histórico que explica la composición del Asia y los datos aportados por la bibliografía más reciente. Se cierra con la bibliografía consultada, una traducción al castellano del texto latino y como apéndice, un índice de los nombres de persona y de los lugares geográficos mencionados.
