This book presents an in-depth review of El Hierro Island, the youngest and most southwesterly volcano of the Canary Islands. In October 2011, a submarine eruption started offshore El Hierro Island. The 2011–2012 El Hierro eruption has probably been the best monitored and studied submarine eruption to date and has sparked interest in the study of this young ocean island volcano. During the last decade, multidisciplinary investigations, e.g., on the geological and volcanological character of its past and latest onshore and offshore eruptions, the geophysical and geochemical signatures of its magmatic plumbing system structure and dynamics, as well as the bio-geophysical interactions and consequences of submarine eruptions in the ocean, have been conducted. This book provides an authoritative review of many of these scientific advances as well as multiple remaining unknowns for the study of El Hierro Island and its 2011–2012 submarine eruption. Such knowledge should be of great interest to specialists not only in the Canary Islands volcanism but also in similar ocean island intraplate volcanoes.

La historia comienza en 1993 cuando el autor estaba preparando la edición del libro de José María Pinto de la Rosa, Apuntes para la historia de las antiguas fortificaciones de Canarias. Al tratar sobre las fortificaciones de La Palma, el autor incluía un documento titulado «Notas históricas sobre las antiguas fortificaciones de la isla de La Palma». Un párrafo, que decía así, le llamó la atención: «En 1742, según inventario practicado por el ingeniero militar don Manuel Gayangos, en virtud de orden dada por el Comandante general de la Provincia don Andrés Bonito de Pignatelli, tenía este castillo (se refiere al de San Miguel) cuatro cañones de bronce de calibres 18, 12, 8 y 4. En uno de estos cañones, que actualmente se halla en el Museo de Artillería de Madrid, se leen los siguientes dísticos: (Traducción: El que arrebató vida y fortunas de todo género / iba a perecer por imperio de las leyes y decreto del juez. / Vive por el favor de Eduardo Sexto y a él, / después de Dios altísimo, debe rendir homenaje de gratitud). En una de las molduras de la culata tiene la siguiente inscripción con el nombre del fabricante: Robert. And. Jhon Owin. Bret her in Ma. Dethis pace.anne Dñi 1551 Un disparo de este castillo que mandaban Pedro Hernández Señorino y Baltasar Hernández de Acosta, echó a pique un navío de los que formaban la escuadra del corsario inglés Francisco Drake el 13 de noviembre de 1585». Desde aquel momento el autor se interesó por el cañón. A lo largo de todos estos años fue recopilando información de los archivos, así como datos sueltos que figuraban en la abundante bibliografía consultada. Cual si se tratara de una investigación policíaca, hizo un recorrido documental a lo largo de los más de 400 años que tiene de vida el cañón. El resultado es el presente trabajo.
