El Manuscrito de Valentim Fernandes es un documento capital para conocer la expansión europea en las costas del África occidental y en sus archipiélagos. Su autor es un moravo establecido en Lisboa, que reunió todo tipo de fuentes sobre los viajes efectuados por los portugueses desde el paso del Cabo Bojador, en 1434, hasta la llegada al Golfo de Guinea, a comienzos del siglo XVI. Su trabajo aprovechó obras anteriores, como las de Zurara, Cadamosto o Diogo Gomes, pero también aportó relatos de primera mano, ofrecidos por informadores que residieron en aquellas regiones. Esta simpar recopilación de datos, en los que no faltan los corográficos, fue posible gracias a su vinculación con la corte lusitana, que le abrió la documentación oficial en ella depositada. A todo esto se unió su buen conocimiento del mercado lisboeta, del que debía informar a sus mentores alemanes. En la obra, publicada por primera vez en nuestra lengua, se mezclan la mirada antropológica, propia de la curiosidad renacentista sobre los nuevos pueblos, con el interés mercantilista del primer capitalismo comercial. Fruto de ello es el amplio panorama de temas tratados: vegetación, fauna, comercio, alimentos, creencias, organización social, contacto lingüístico, toponimia y un largo etcétera. Además, las distintas informaciones aparecen claramente distinguidas por culturas y regiones.
