Excerpt from Description of the Greatest Literary Curiosity of the Age Such a work will lengthen the lives of the great men of the future, by rendering unnecessary the immense waste of time which the want of ready and reliable information has hitherto imposed on historical writers. The Rebellion has caused the production of more books than any other event in the history of the world, said the Evening Post. The amount of paper and print that has been consumed in the issue of the different volumes and pamphlets upon the military, social and political aspeets of our civil strife, is immense, and copies have been sown broadcast throughout the land; but when the time shall have arrived for the production of an impartial and dispassionate history of the war, it is not to these works that the historian will be likely to look for his facts, but rather to the narrative of occurrenees as they appeared in the columns of the daily press. To arrange and classify ready for use the material he will there find, would be so great a labor, that it would alone be enough to deter many from entering upon the task. It is difficult to conceive that any private citizen could have been found bold enough to undertake the task, and enthusiastic and brave enough to persevere amid extraordinary difficulties in forming such a Record as Mr. Townsend has done; far surpassing anything of the kind that the British Museum, the Bibliotheq-ue Imperial of Paris, or any other library in the world can ever possess. Challenging the ‘success story’ of curiosity from original sin to intellectual virtue, this study uses an innovative methodological approach to the history of ideas as a non-teleological neural network based on current research in information technology and neurophysiology. The network offers a dynamic alternative to the ‘development’ of curiosity within the progress-oriented mythology of the Enlightenment, emphasizing the oscillation and interaction of ideas within the processes of their construction, as well as exposing the power relations behind them. The text corpus focuses on enactments of curiosity in English literature of the 'Long' Eighteenth Century (c. 1680-1818), such as transgression of boundaries, breach of taboo, gendered curiosity, sensationalism, or academic endeavour, bringing together a variety of examples from all major genres. The Age of Curiosity contributes to current debates on a post-Foucauldian renewal of Lovejoy’s history of ideas in Enlightenment studies, exploring both curiosity as an indispensable trait for the search of answers to the fundamental yet unresolved questions of ‘identity’ or ‘truth’, and its potential as cura, the care for others and the world.

Loving Literature written by Deidre Shauna Lynch and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

One of the most common—and wounding—misconceptions about literary scholars today is that they simply don’t love books. While those actually working in literary studies can easily refute this claim, such a response risks obscuring a more fundamental question: why should they? That question led Deidre Shauna Lynch into the historical and cultural investigation of Loving Literature. How did it come to be that professional literary scholars are expected not just to study, but to love literature, and to inculcate that love in generations of students? What Lynch discovers is that books, and the attachments we form to them, have played a vital role in the formation of private life—that the love of literature, in other words, is deeply embedded in the history of literature. Yet at the same time, our love is neither self-evident nor ahistorical: our views of books as objects of affection have clear roots in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century publishing, reading habits, and domestic history. While never denying the very real feelings that warm our relationship to books, Loving Literature nonetheless serves as a riposte to those who use the phrase “the love of literature” as if its meaning were transparent. Lynch writes, “It is as if those on the side of love of literature had forgotten what literary texts themselves say about love’s edginess and complexities.” With this masterly volume, Lynch restores those edges and allows us to revel in those complexities.

The Old Curiosity Shop tells the story of Nell Trent, a beautiful and virtuous young girl of "not quite fourteen". An orphan, she lives with her grandfather in his shop of odds and ends. Secretly obsessed with ensuring that Nell does not die in poverty, grandfather attempts to provide Nell with a good inheritance through gambling at cards. He keeps his nocturnal games a secret, but borrows heavily from the evil Daniel Quilp, a malicious, grotesquely deformed, hunchbacked dwarf moneylender. In the end, he gambles away what little money they have, and Quilp seizes the opportunity to take possession of the shop and evict Nell and her grandfather. Grandfather suffers a breakdown that leaves him bereft of his wits, and Nell takes him away to the Midlands of England, to live as beggars.
