Policy makers, mineral exploration experts, and regional planners decide how public lands, which may contain undiscovered resources, should be used or whether to invest in exploration for minerals on a regular basis. Decisions are also made concerning mineral resource adequacy, national policy, and regional development. This book makes explicit the factors that can affect a mineral-related decision so that decision-makers can clearly see the possible consequences of their decisions. Based on work done at the US Geological Survey, the authors address the question of the kinds of issues decision-makers are trying to resolve and what forms of information would aid in resolving these issues. The goal of the process discussed is to offer unbiased quantitative assessments in a format needed in decision-support systems so that consequences of alternative courses of action can be examined with respect to land use or mineral-resource development. An integrated approach focuses on three assessment parts and the models that support them. Although the concepts presented are straightforward and understandable, in assessments, carefully listening to the experts in other disciplines leads to better products. Navigating through and making sense of QRA requires not just learning rules and equations, but life experiences and common sense. The judgment required to understand which tools to apply are best learned by example and experience. This will be useful to governmental or industrial policy makers, managers of explorations, planners of regional development, and similar decision-makers.

A grade-tonnage deposit model represents the distribution and the statistical relationships of the pre-production tonnages and the average grades of the commodities of well-explored deposits of a particular mineral deposit type. The purpose of constructing such a model is to further define some of the more common mineral deposit types that occur in Ontario. This report documents 16 such grade-tonnage deposit models, representing Ontario deposit types for which there are no available or adequate models from the United States Geological Survey. The deposit types include: lode gold, Archean volcanic-associated massive sulphide, volcanic-hosted copper, paleoplacer uranium, stratiform chromite, Precambrian porphyry, lithium and uranium pegmatites, talc, magnesite, Cobalt type silver-sulpharsenide vein, Canadian komatiite-hosted nickel-copper, and mafic intrusion-hosted titanium-iron-vanadium-phosphorus.

Documents the mineral potential evaluation procedure that the Ontario Geological Survey has developed and implemented for participation in land use planning assessments in areas where potentially conflicting land use activities have been or may be proposed. The procedure is also recommended for use by geological consultants performing mineral potential evaluations for municipalities and land use agencies. The procedure involves a subjective ranking of the mineral potential using objective, defined criteria. The region to be assessed is subdivided on the basis of geologic and metallogenic parameters, and the areas are ranked with respect to the occurrence of specific deposit types. The applicable geological, geophysical and/or geochemical, and economic criteria for each deposit type are each subjectively ranked and the ratings are combined in an overlapping circle scheme. Concludes with discussion of how the evaluation methodology can assist with the consideration of provincial interests in the municipal land use planning process under the 1990 Planning Act.

Summarises results of Precambrian mapping conducted in a study area covering about 200 square kilometres and located about 110 kilometres west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Includes a summary of the area's mineral exploration history, descriptions of the area's general geology, rock types, metamorphism, igneous rock geochemistry, structural geology, and economic geology. Base and precious metal occurrences are described, as represented by three major styles of mineralisation in the study area: stratigraphically controlled, intrusion hosted, and shear/quartz vein hosted. Concludes with recommendations for future exploration.
