Spain After the Indignados/15M Movement explores how the aftershocks of the 2007 Great Recession restructured Spain’s political sphere and political imaginary. It brings together a representative sample of Spain’s leading progressive voices, including two of the five founding members of the Podemos party. The essays herein explore the areas of economics, politics, ecology, social change, media, and cultural politics in order to present a broad, critical account of contemporary Spain, with a special emphasis on emerging forms of sociopolitical contestation, self-organizing, democratic participation, and radical politics. The edited volume argues that Spanish cultural studies—which originally gravitated toward celebratory accounts of capitalist modernization, the cultural Movida and the advent of a postmodern Spain—must continue to build a new cultural politics that not only challenges the accepted narrative of the Spanish Transition to democracy, but that is committed to confronting the civilizatory challenges currently faced.

This book addresses the changing relationships among political participation, political representation, and popular mobilization in Spain from the 1766 protest in Madrid against the early Bourbon reforms until the citizen revolution of 1868 that first introduced universal suffrage and led to the ousting of the monarchy. Popular Participation and the Democratic Imagination in Spain shows that a notion of the “crowd” internally dividing the concept of “people” existed before the advent of Liberalism, allowing for the enduring subordination of popular participation to representation in politics. In its wider European and colonial American context, the study analyzes semantic changes in a range of cultural spheres, from parliamentary debate to historical narrative and aesthetics. This book analyzes the issue of food insecurity in Europe. It highlights the role played by cities in promoting resilient, solidarity-based and food and nutritionally safe communities. Las identidades sociales de grupos étnicos, religiosos, de géneros, corporaciones, etc. se construyen y resignifican a lo largo de las trayectorias vitales de individuos, familias y redes relacionales a través de la historia. Conceptos tales como raza, etnicidad, identidad están siendo analizados desde múltiples enfoques disciplinares y con el uso de una diversidad de fuentes. La heterogeneidad étnica, cultural, social, económica, religiosa genera espacios de encuentros e integración, pero también espacios de conflicto, miedos y discriminación. Instituciones, sectores políticos, económicos y sociales generan fragmentación y un organigrama donde los diferentes grupos sociales deben ser ubicados para conservar un orden conveniente. Dicha fragmentación origina marginalidad, exclusión y reacciones discriminatorios de dominantes sobre oprimidos. Manifestaciones tales xenofobia y racismo se hallan presente a lo largo de la historia y es necesario desde los estudios académicos poner de manifiesto cómo se construyen las identidades sociales -individuales y colectivas- y se resignifican a medida que las sociedades cambian. Esas fronteras indefinidas generan la necesidad de establecer lindes, es decir conducen implícitamente a la discriminación, los comportamientos desigualdades y la exclusión.
