The desert islands of the Gulf of California are among the world's best-preserved archipelagos. The diverse and unique flora, from the cardón forests of Cholludo to the agave-dominated slopes of San Esteban remain much as they were centuries ago, when the Comcaac (Seri people) were the only human presence in the region. Almost 400 plant species exist here, with each island manifesting a unique composition of vegetation and flora. For thousands of years, climatic and biological forces have sculpted a set of unparalleled desert worlds. Plant Life of a Desert Archipelago is the first in-depth coverage of the plants on islands in the Gulf of California found in between the coasts of Baja California and Sonora. The work is the culmination of decades of study by botanist Richard Felger and recent investigations by Benjamin Wilder, in collaboration with Sr. Humberto Romero-Morales, one of the most knowledgeable Seris concerning the region's flora. Their collective effort weaves together careful and accurate botanical science with the rich cultural and stunning physical setting of this island realm. The researchers surveyed, collected, and studied thousands of plants—seen here in meticulous illustrations and stunning color photographs—providing the most precise species accounts of the islands ever made. To access remote parts of the islands the authors worked directly with the Comcaac, an indigenous community who have lived off marine and terrestrial life in this coastal desert region for centuries. Invaluable information regarding indigenous names and distributions are an intrinsic part of this work. The flora descriptions are extraordinarily detailed and painstakingly crafted for field biologists. Conservationists, students, and others who are interested in learning about the natural wealth of the Gulf of California, desert regions, or islands in general are sure to be captivated by this rich and fascinating volume.

A man sets out to Mexico to avenge his father's death in this western from USA Today bestselling author Ralph Compton. Nathan Stone, the man they called The Gunfighter, lay dead in the dust of an El Paso street. The Sandlin gang kicked up that dust as they rode back laughing into Mexico, where the U.S. law couldn't touch them and local law didn't want to. Behind him Nathan Stone left his horse, his Winchester, his custom-made Colts, and his name. The son who had grown up without him took them all. His name is Wes Stone. He used to be a lawman, but when he picks up his father's guns, he takes down the star from his chest. Wes knows the impossible odds of going against the outlaw army and its empire of evil. But he knows something else too. He's his father's son, and he's going to teach his father's killers exactly what that means... More Than Six Million Ralph Compton Books In Print!

Ecological Genetics written by P. F. Brussard and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

Traditionally, studies in ecological genetics have involved both field observations and laboratory genetic analyses. Comparisons and cor relations between these two kinds of data have provided valuable in formation on the genetic strategies behind the evolutionary adapta tions of species and their component local populations. Indeed, much of our current understanding of the dynamics of evolutionary pro cesses has come fro~ syntheses of ecological and genetic information. Since the recent discovery of abundant markers in the form of protein polymorphisms, scientific interest in the connections between genetics and ecology has quickened considerably. This volume contains the proceedings of the Society for the Study of Evolution's symposium, Genetics and Ecology: The Interface, held at Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York, June 12-15, 1977. This particular topic was selected because of a general feeling that a significant integration of genetics and ecology has developed in the last decade or so. Host ecologists no longer believe that each species has a characteristic and constant birth, death, and develonment rate, habitat preference, and so on, but that these para~eters vary a~ong populations and are at least partially under genetic control and sub ject to natural selection. Similarly, few population geneticists still view any species as infinitely large, panmictic, constant in numbers, and distributed evenly throughout its range.

The Oxford Handbook Of Linguistic Fieldwork written by Nicholas Thieberger and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-24 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book offers a state-of-the-art guide to linguistic fieldwork, reflecting its collaborative nature across the subfields of linguistics and disciplines such as astronomy, anthropology, biology, musicology, and ethnography. Experienced scholars and fieldworkers explain the methods and approaches needed to understand a language in its full cultural context and to document it accessibly and enduringly. They consider the application of new technological approaches to recording and documentation, but never lose sight of the crucial relationship between subject and researcher. The book is timely: an increased awareness of dying languages and vanishing dialects has stimulated the impetus for recording them as well as the funds required to do so. The handbook is an indispensible source, guide, and reference for everyone involved in linguistic and cultural work.

Coastal Heritage And Cultural Resilience written by Lisa L. Price and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-24 with Nature categories.

This book explores the knowledge, work and life of Pacific coastal populations from the Pacific Northwest to Panama. Center stage in this volume is the knowledge people acquire on coastal and marine ecosystems. Material and aesthetic benefits from interacting with the environment contribute to the ongoing building of coastal cultures. The contributors are particularly interested in how local knowledge -either recently generated or transmitted along generations- interfaces with science, conservation, policy and artistic expression. Their observations exhibit a wide array of outcomes ranging from resource and human exploitation to the magnification of cultural resilience and coastal heritage. The interdisciplinary nature of ethnobiology allows the chapter authors to have a broad range of freedom when examining their subject matter. They build a multifaceted understanding of coastal heritage through the different lenses offered by the humanities, social sciences, oceanography, fisheries and conservation science and, not surprisingly, the arts. Coastal Heritage and Cultural Resilience establishes an intimate bond between coastal communities and the audience in a time when resilience of coastal life needs to be celebrated and fortified.
