EDUCAÇÃO E FUNDAMENTOS Desenvolvimento Infantil nas Periferias é o primeiro volume de uma série de três, que relatam uma experiência inédita de Educação Infantil, realizada por uma especialista em Educação, após 40 anos de atividade profissional na capital do Rio Grande do Sul. Fato surpreendente é que, mesmo considerando-se muito experiente, só então começou a perceber com clareza “o que” esteve para ela oculto em toda sua vida profissional. Observando por 15 anos consecutivos uma comunidade periférica, na assistência psicopedagógica passou a tratar especialmente da “Infância”, criando métodos e técnicas diferenciados, num projeto pedagógico cuja política envolveu as famílias e a comunidade. Tendo como enfoque as necessidades da comunidade, procurou centrar todas as atividades no enfoque do Desenvolvimento Humano, envolvendo na ação pedagógica todo o ambiente interacional dos sujeitos da educação: as crianças de 3 a 6 anos de idade. Dando novas características à Educação Infantil, de acordo com as pautas comportamentais dos cidadãos da comunidade, criou os Laboratórios de Desenvolvimento Infantil, colocando os genitores dos alunos como “agentes da educação”. Após nove anos de trabalho, as pesquisas, também publicadas, mostram que o desenvolvimento infantil realizado pelos “Laboratórios” produziram efeito positivo: - na alfabetização e adaptação aos currículos da Escola Fundamental; - no rendimento escolar, no comportamento social e na permanência no curso; - no compromisso da família com a educação escolar dos filhos. A autora concluiu que, se não estivesse convivendo 15 anos na comunidade, jamais perceberia que “o fundamental na educação para uma legítima cidadania é o Desenvolvimento Humano, cuja época certa de fazer é no processo de Socialização da Criança – na idade pré-escolar. This edited volume provides the follow up to Erling et al.’s (2021) Multilingual Learning and Language Supportive Pedagogies in Sub-Saharan Africa. The strategies put forward in Volume 1 included multilingual pedagogies that allow students to draw on their full linguistic repertoires, translanguaging and other language supportive pedagogies. While there is great traction in the pedagogical strategies proposed in Volume 1, limited progress has been made in terms of multilingual education in SSA. Thus, the main focus of this follow-up volume is to explore the question of why former colonial languages and monolingual approaches continue to be used as the dominant languages of education, even when we have multilingual pedagogies and materials that could and do work and despite substantial evidence that learners have difficulties when taught in a language they do not understand. This book offers perspectives to answer this question through focusing on the internal and external pressures which impact the capacity for implementing multilingual strategies in educational contexts at regional, national, and community levels. Chapters provide insights into how to better understand and work within these contemporary constraints and challenge dominant monoglossic discourses which inhibit the implementation of multilingual education in SSA. The volume focuses on three main areas which have proven to be stumbling blocks to the effective implementation of multilingual education to date, namely: Assessment, Ideology and Policy.
