His future as a medicine man seems preordained, due to his six toes on each foot, giving him special status with his people. Working with his mentor, Grey Elk, Shadow Dancer has to pay his dues as an apprentice, learning about medicinal properties of local plants, and connecting to the natural and spiritual world that he inhabits. A romance is ignited when the lovely Spotted Deer surprises him on his perch one evening. When a mysterious coughing sickness begins to spread through the canyon, Shadow Dancer is in a race against time to save his young family. Eight hundred years later, archaeologist Rachel Thompson finds herself on a new adventure. When two of the team members become sick with a severe illness, their quest to uncover the truth suddenly becomes much more deadly. The dark tentacles of a child trafficking cartel have encroached upon a quiet and peaceful region of the Davis Mountains. Their secret compound has gone undetected by law enforcement and their horrendous endeavor operates unfettered. Cory Connor, a focused college bound student planning on becoming a medical scientist, often hunts venomous snakes and insects on area ranches for his detailed work with a local doctor researching how venom may be used to cure diseases. While attending church one Sunday, Cory became aware of the cartel's villainous trade by use of his extraordinary mental and observational abilities. Divining that a local rancher has been duped into leasing a portion of his land to the nefarious trafficking ring, Cory reports the information to his father Les Connor, a U.S. border patrol senior supervisor. Appropriate law enforcement agencies cannot be involved without solid evidence, so Les initiates a private investigation into these crimes. He engages three close friends he trusted to help. It's paramount they identify the land owner, locate the traffickers' compound, bring in the appropriate authorities, apprehend the criminals, and save the children. Les tells his son to let the authorities handle the situation, but young Cory's entanglement with a beautiful yet troubled female suitor thrust them all into an unforgiving plight of brutality. Desert Mountain Enigma reflects the strength of character of the people in the Davis Mountains area and what lengths they will go to protect their community and humanity at large. Despite the dark subject matter the book is laced with humor, love of family, and unity of friends.

The Secret of the Desert by Coutts Brisbane is a stunning accumulation of mysteries: a ship with no known origin, a naturalist shot dead during a butterfly hunt, and much, much more. Excerpt: "SAIL lib, port bow, suh!" the lookout in the fore-crosstrees hailed the schooner's deck. "Two stick boat lib, suh!" Captain Girvan, R.N.R., hoisted his long body from the depths of his deck-chair, stared ahead over the shimmering wake of the sun setting across the placid waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria, then swung himself into the main rigging."

The Akimel O'odham, or Pima Indians, of the northern Sonoran Desert continue to make their home along Arizona's Gila River despite the alarming degradation of their habitat that has occurred over the past century. The oldest living Pimas can recall a lush riparian ecosystem and still recite more than two hundred names for plants in their environment, but they are the last generation who grew up subsisting on cultivated native crops or wild-foraged plants. Ethnobiologist Amadeo M. Rea has written the first complete ethnobotany of the Gila River Pima and has done so from the perspective of the Pimas themselves. At the Desert's Green Edge weaves the Pima view of the plants found in their environment with memories of their own history and culture, creating a monumental testament to their traditions and way of life. Rea first discusses the Piman people, environment, and language, then proceeds to share their botanical knowledge in entries for 240 plants that systematically cover information on economic botany, folk taxonomy, and linguistics. The entries are organized according to Pima life-form categories such as plants growing in water, eaten greens, and planted fruit trees. All are anecdotal, conveying the author's long personal involvement with the Pimas, whether teaching in their schools or learning from them in conversations and interviews. At the Desert's Green Edge is an archive of otherwise unavailable plant lore that will become a benchmark for botanists and anthropologists. Enhanced by more than one hundred brush paintings of plants, it is written to be equally useful to nonspecialists so that the Pimas themselves can turn to it as a resource regarding their former lifeways. More than an encyclopedia of facts, it is the Pimas' own story, a witness to a changing way of life in the Sonoran Desert.
