Cooperative relay technologies are currently being researched to address the ever-increasing demand for higher data rates, extended coverage, greater mobility, and enhanced reliability. This thesis thus focuses on (1) developing new physical-layer wireless technologies for cooperative relay networks and (2) ascertaining their viability through performance analysis. Specifically, (i) new system and channel models, (ii) signaling and relay-processing algorithms, (iii) joint relay-antenna selection strategies, (iv) joint transmit-receive beamforming techniques, and (v) comprehensive performance analysis frameworks are developed for one-way, two-way, and multi-way cooperative relay networks. Our first research focuses on developing a comprehensive analytical framework for deriving closed-form performance bounds of multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks. Specifically, mathematically-tractable, asymptotically-exact end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio bounds are first formulated, and thereby, the outage probability and average bit error rate bounds are derived. In our second work, adaptive multiple-relay selection strategies are designed and analyzed for multi-relay AF networks to optimize the tradeoffs among the system performance, complexity, and wireless resource usage. Our third research investigates joint antenna and relay selection strategies, which are optimal in the sense of the achievable diversity gains, for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) one-way relay networks and MIMO two-way relay networks. Finally, joint transmit/receive zero forcing transmission strategies are developed for MIMO multi-way relay networks for optimizing the achievable diversity-multiplexing trade-off. The key design criterion of the aforementioned transmission designs is to leverage spatial diversity and/or spatial multiplexing gains available among distributed single-antenna and/or multiple-antenna wireless terminals through distributed transmission and efficient signal processing. Moreover, the fundamental relationships among the data rate, coverage, and reliability metrics are characterized, and thereby, the detrimental impact of practical wireless transmission impairments on the performance of the aforementioned transmission strategies are quantified. The insights obtained through these analyses are then used to refine our physical-layer designs to achieve desirable trade-offs between the system performance, resource usage and implementation complexity.

The next-generation wireless technologies are currently being researched to address the ever-increasing demands for higher data rates, massive connectivity, improved reliability, and extended coverage. Recently, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) has gained significant attention as a new physical-layer transmission technology that can achieve unprecedented spectral and energy efficiency gains via aggressive spatial multiplexing. Thus, massive MIMO has been one of the key enabling technologies for the fifth-generation and subsequent wireless standards. This dissertation thus focuses on developing a system, channel, and signal models by considering the practical wireless transmission impairments for massive MIMO systems, and ascertaining the viability of massive MIMO in fulfilling massive access, improved spectrum, enhanced security, and energy efficiency requirements. Specifically, new system and channel models, pilot sequence designs and channel estimation techniques, secure transmit/receive beamforming techniques, transmit power allocation schemes with enhanced security provisions, energy efficiency, and user fairness, and comprehensive performance analysis frameworks are developed for massive MIMO-aided non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), cognitive spectrum-sharing, and wireless relaying architectures. Our first work focuses on developing physical-layer transmission schemes for NOMA-aided massive MIMO systems. A spatial signature-based user-clustering and pilot allocation scheme is first formulated, and thereby, a hybrid orthogonal multiple access (OMA)/NOMA transmission scheme is proposed to boost the number of simultaneous connections. In our second work, the viability of invoking downlink pilots to boost the achievable rate of NOMA-aided massive MIMO is investigated. The third research contribution investigates the performance of underlay spectrum-sharing massive MIMO systems for reverse time division duplexing based transmission strategies, in which primary and secondary systems concurrently operate in opposite directions. Thereby, we show that the secondary system can be operated with its maximum average transmit power independent of the primary system in the limit of infinity many primary/secondary base-station antennas. In our fourth work, signal processing techniques, power allocation, and relay selection schemes are designed and analyzed for massive MIMO relay networks to optimize the trade-off among the achievable user rates, coverage, and wireless resource usage. Finally, the cooperative jamming and artificial noise-based secure transmission strategies are developed for massive MIMO relay networks with imperfect legitimate user channel information and with no channel knowledge of the eavesdropper. The key design criterion of the aforementioned transmission strategies is to efficiently combine the spatial multiplexing gains and favorable propagation conditions of massive MIMO with properties of NOMA, underlay spectrum-sharing, and wireless relay networks via efficient signal processing.

Cooperative communication has recently become a key technology for modern wireless networks such as 3GPP long-term evolution and WiMAX, because in such networks the transmission rate, the communication reliability, and coverage problems could be improved in a cost-effective manner. This, however, faces many design challenges. First, cooperative transmission typically involves a relaying phase which requires extra resources. This may cause a reduction in the spectral efficiency. Second, extra control signaling increases the complexity of operation, which may limit practical implementation. In addition, a wireless channel is time-varying, mainly due to the multipath propagation. As a result, a careful design of efficient cooperative communication systems is required, not only to enhance the spectral efficiency and maintain the quality-of-service (QoS), but also to be practical. In this dissertation, we aim to address the challenges imposed by cooperative communication and wireless transmission, and design the efficient and distributed systems which can be practically implemented in existing wireless systems. The research work is divided into two main topics: 1) adaptive cooperative wireless systems with variable-rate transmission, and 2) cooperative wireless systems with a power consumption constraint. The first topic investigates how the spectral efficiency of cooperative wireless communication systems can be improved while maintaining the QoS in terms of bit error rate and outage probability. The spectral efficiency enhancement is achieved by using three techniques: adaptivity over the relay node (i.e., relay node is active or not), adaptivity over the modulation mode, and relay selection. Based on that, we propose several adaptive cooperative schemes for both the decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) protocols. To evaluate these schemes, we provide performance analysis in terms of average spectral efficiency, average bit error rate (ABER), and outage probability over Rayleigh fading channels. We start with the single-relay cooperative system using DF protocol, in which two adaptive cooperative schemes with variable-rate transmission are proposed. The first scheme, called the minimum error rate scheme (MERS), aims to exploit the transmit diversity to improve the bit error rate. By trading the multiplexing gain against the diversity gain, we propose the second scheme, called the maximum spectral efficiency scheme (MSES), in which cooperative transmission is avoided whenever it is not beneficial. The MERS improves the ABER significantly and achieves equal or better average spectral efficiency compared to the fixed (i.e., non-adaptive) relaying scheme. In contrast, the MSES provides the best average spectral efficiency due to its ability to not only adapt to the channel variation but also to switch between cooperative and non-cooperative transmissions. To further increase the spectral efficiency, we then propose the third scheme, called variable-rate based relay selection (VRRS) scheme, in which a relay node is selected from among the available relay nodes, based on a predefined criterion. Furthermore, we propose two AF adaptive cooperative schemes, mainly to enhance the spectral efficiency. In the first scheme, we introduce a generalized switching policy (GSP) for a single-relay cooperative wireless system that exploits the variable-rate transmission and useful cooperative regions. The second scheme, called the AF efficient relay selection (AFERS) scheme, extends the GSP to also consider the relay selection technique. Analytical and simulation results verify that the AFERS scheme not only outperforms conventional direct transmission in terms of the average spectral efficiency, but also the AF fixed relaying and the outage-based AF adaptive cooperative scheme. The second topic investigates the fair power consumption of the relay nodes for AF cooperative wireless communication systems. The fairness is defined as to achieve equal power consumption over the relay nodes. We focus on how the relay selection process can be controlled in a distributed manner so that the power consumption of the relay nodes can be included in relay selection. We first introduce a simple closed-form expression for the weight coefficient used in order to achieve the considered fairness that depends only on the local average channel conditions of the relay path. We then derive closed-form expressions of the weighted outage probability and ABER and show that our proposed strategy not only has less complexity than the conventional centralized one but also provides better accuracy in distributing the total consumed power equally among the relay nodes without affecting the performance.

In this thesis, several important aspects of cooperative wireless multiuser networks are investigated. The focus lies on coherent two-hop relaying networks where several amplify-and-forward (AF) relays assist the communication between multiple source-destination pairs. First, the impact of local oscillator (LO) imperfections and I/Q imbalance at the relays on two-hop relaying is investigated. A special focus lies on the comparison between frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) relays. Based on the observation that the direction in which a channel between two wireless nodes is measured has an impact on the estimate, phase synchronization requirements for coherent relaying networks are then found. Several channel estimation protocols that differ in the direction in which the single-hop channels are measured are furthermore identi'ed and their performance is compared. Next, a very simple phase synchronization scheme is presented that provides a set of relays with a common LO phase. Two coherent beamforming schemes, namely multiuser zero-forcing (MUZF) and multiuser minimum mean squared error (MMSE) relaying, are then investigated. Finally, a real-world demonstrator for distributed wireless communication networks (called RACooN Lab) is presented. It was used to implement coherent cooperative communication schemes on a practical two-hop relaying network.
