As the world turns its focus to the protection of our societies underlying infrastructures, the realization that the world runs on computer networks has taken hold. The number of new technologies and solutions to better protect and secure the networks that allow our world to operate, is rapidly growing. As these technologies and solutions emerge, there is a need to study, test and further develop them. The Internet-Scale Event and Attack Generation Environment (ISEAGE) laboratory provides a unique environment for this studying, testing and development of networking protocols, technologies, and solutions. However, the ISEAGE laboratory also has a number of its own unique needs. Among which is the need for a methodology and framework for the generation and management of simulated network traffic. Network Traffic Simulator (NTS) provides a framework and baseline for a variety of network traffic simulation tools laid out in the ISEAGE Implementation Plan. Running from a single networked machine, the NTS tool can simulate an entire network of legitimate computer traffic in a variety of protocols and circumstances. Moreover, NTS provides the ability to script network traffic into easily readable and executable network conversations. This thesis provides the requirements, design, and implementation details of Network Traffic Simulator. This traffic simulation utility provides the ISEAGE laboratory with a unique solution for the insertion and management of networked packets and conversations, as well as a framework for the development of a suite of other network traffic insertion tools.

The increasing power of computer technologies, the evolution of software en- neering and the advent of the intelligent transport systems has prompted traf c simulation to become one of the most used approaches for traf c analysis in s- port of the design and evaluation of traf c systems. The ability of traf c simulation to emulate the time variability of traf c phenomena makes it a unique tool for capturing the complexity of traf c systems. In recent years, traf c simulation – and namely microscopic traf c simulation – has moved from the academic to the professional world. A wide variety of traf- c simulation software is currently available on the market and it is utilized by thousands of users, consultants, researchers and public agencies. Microscopic traf c simulation based on the emulation of traf c ows from the dynamics of individual vehicles is becoming one the most attractive approaches. However, traf c simulation still lacks a uni ed treatment. Dozens of papers on theory and applications are published in scienti c journals every year. A search of simulation-related papers and workshops through the proceedings of the last annual TRB meetings would support this assertion, as would a review of the minutes from speci cally dedicated meetings such as the International Symposiums on Traf c Simulation (Yokohama, 2002; Lausanne, 2006; Brisbane, 2008) or the International Workshops on Traf c Modeling and Simulation (Tucson, 2001; Barcelona, 2003; Sedona, 2005; Graz 2008). Yet, the only comprehensive treatment of the subject to be found so far is in the user’s manuals of various software products.

The design and development of cost-effective mobile broadband wireless access networks is a key challenge for many mobile network operators. The over-dimensioning or under-dimensioning of an access network results in both additional costs and customer dissatisfaction. Thushara Weerawardane introduces new transport technologies and features for High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Using advanced scientific methods, he proposes new adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms, then defends them with highly-developed analytical models derived from Markov chains. For faster analysis, compared to long-lasting detailed simulations, these models provide optimum network performance and ensure reliable quality standards for end users during transport network congestion. Further, the author investigates and analyzes LTE transport network performance by introducing novel traffic differentiation models and buffer management techniques during intra-LTE handovers.

The growing demands for communication and complex network infrastructure relay on overcoming the network measurement and management challenges. Lately, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have considered to improve the network system, e.g., AI-based network traffic classification, traffic prediction, intrusion detection system, etc. Most of the development of networking AI models require abundant traffic data samples to have a proper measuring or managing. However, such databases are rare to be found publicly. To counter this issue, we develop a real-time network traffic generator to be used by network AI models. This network traffic generator has a data enabler that reads data from real applications and establishes packet payload database and a traffic pattern database. The packet payload database has the data packets of real application, where network traffic generator locates the payload in the capture file (PCAP). The other database is traffic pattern database that contains the traffic patterns of a real application. This database depends on the timestamp in each packet and the number of packets in the traffic sample to form a traffic database. The network traffic generator has a built-in network simulator that allows to mimic the real application network traffic flows using these databases to simulate the real-traffic application. The simulator provides a configurable network environment as an interface. To assess our work, we tested the network traffic generator on two network AI models based on simulated traffic, i.e., AI classification model, and AI traffic prediction. The simulation performance and the evaluation result showed improvement in networking AI models using the proposed network traffic generator, which reduce time consuming and data efficiency challenges.
