Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

One side effect of the proliferation of relational databases within a single organization is that sharing of data to access a global information base is difficult. People erroneously assume that since almost all of the commercially available RDBMSs support the Structured Query Language (SQL), sharing of data is easy. Unfortunately, currently available systems only support a specific dialect of SQL. The Amadeus front-end system overcomes the data- sharing problem. With the Amadeus front-end system, database users can use one common language called Dataflow Query Language (DFQL) to access heterogeneous RDBMSS. A query specified in DFQL is correctly translated into a SQL dialect that the connected RDBMS recognizes. With this front-end approach, the user can access data from multiple databases by writing a single DFQL query, instead of writing multiple SQL queries. A prototype query builder is reimplemented using an object-oriented design. This component of Amadeus interacts with the user for creating DFQL queries.

Traditionally, the design and implementation of a conventional database system begins and ends with the choice of a data model followed by the specification of a model-based data language. Thus, the database system is restricted to a single data model and a specific data language. An alternative to this traditional approach to database-system development is the multi-lingual database system (MLDS). This alternative approach enables the user to access and manage a large collection of databased via several data models and their corresponding data languages wihtout the aforementioned restiction. This thesis presents the specification and implementation of a relational/SQl language interface for the MLDS. Specifically, it presents the specification and implementation of an interface which translates SQL language calls into attribute-based language requests. We describe the software engineering aspects of our implementation and an overview of the four modules which comprise our relational/SQL language interface.

The purpose of this study is to analyze and develop a distributed object-oriented database management system (DOODBMS) application to support parallel software development of the Parallel Algorithms and Applications Group (PAAG) at AFIT. By following the software lifecycle of object-oriented paradigm, this thesis investigation is intended to generate requirements analysis, design, implementation, user interface design and implementation, and integration of the database application with the user interface. ITASCA, an existing DOODBMS platform, has been chosen to prototype the application for its distribution functionalities and object-oriented modeling power. The user interface of the database application is based on X-window OSF/Motif front-end system for its efficiency. Various operations of this distributed database include: retrieve information in the database, modify data at the local site, look up information of publications of libraries, etc. The user may access each local computer through graphical user interface without knowing the query language constructs of the DOODBMS platform ...
