Solar radiation is amongst the cleanest energy source available today. Photovoltaic (PV) systems range from large solar farms spread across acres of land producing a few hundred megawatts of power to small device powering systems. Grid connected rooftop PV systems are the most common form of solar energy utilization that helps home owners to reduce carbon footprint and save thousands of dollars in utility bills. This project focuses on the design and modeling of a 5KW residential PV system connected to a 240V single phase grid. The proposed system incorporates a two-level DC-DC conversion topology. The first level is the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller, while the next level maintains the DC link voltage with the help of a voltage controller. The DC to AC conversion is done by an H-bridge inverter with an LCL filter designed to reduce the distortions associated with the conversion process. The AC output is then connected to a single phase 240V AC grid. The system is modeled in MATLAB Simulink. This project also introduces System Advisor Model (SAM), a design tool for modeling renewable energy systems. A chapter is dedicated to the detailed explanation on the procedure to model residential PV systems in SAM. Following this a 5KW PV system in Northridge, California is modeled in SAM using specific weather data, utility rates, and typical residential load. Technical and economic analysis of the designed system concludes this graduate project.

Photovoltaics, the direct conversion of light from the sun into electricity, is an increasingly important means of distributed power generation. The SPICE modelling tool is typically used in the development of electrical and electronic circuits. When applied to the modelling of PV systems it provides a means of understanding and evaluating the performance of solar cells and systems. The majority of books currently on the market are based around discussion of the solar cell as semiconductor devices rather than as a system to be modelled and applied to real-world problems. Castaner and Silvestre provide a comprehensive treatment of PV system technology analysis. Using SPICE, the tool of choice for circuits and electronics designers, this book highlights the increasing importance of modelling techniques in the quantitative analysis of PV systems. This unique treatment presents both students and professional engineers, with the means to understand, evaluate and develop their own PV modules and systems. * Provides a unique, self-contained, guide to the modelling and design of PV systems * Presents a practical, application oriented approach to PV technology, something that is missing from the current literature * Uses the widely known SPICE circuit-modelling tool to analyse and simulate the performance of PV modules for the first time * Written by respected and well-known academics in the field

This book outlines the global opportunity to increase solar photovoltaic (PV) plant energy yields through modelling and analysis. Because it is endlessly available in Earth’s atmosphere, solar PV energy extraction is rising faster than all other renewable energy sources worldwide. Thus, technological improvements are needed to lower the cost of solar PV per watt every year. Since solar PV efficiency is low, modelling and analysis of boost converters, maximum power point tracing, solar PV cleaners, irradiation tracing systems, and panel tilt adjustments all help increase solar PV plant energy yield. Solar Photovoltaic System Modelling and Analysis covers topics such as: Relevance, types, and growth rate of renewable resources How solar PV systems generate electricity Panel varieties and their importance Solar PV designs and architectures Charge controllers, including the latest technologies Boost converter modelling and analysis in MATLAB The necessity of hybrid power plants (modelling and analysis) Designing a solar PV system including panel selection for a specific application, as well as converter and inverter estimation

In the past decade, there has been a substantial increase of grid-feeding photovoltaic applications, thus raising the importance of solar electricity in the energy mix. This trend is expected to continue and may even increase. Apart from the high initial investment cost, the fluctuating nature of the solar resource raises particular insertion problems in electrical networks. Proper grid managing demands short- and long-time forecasting of solar power plant output. Weather modeling and forecasting of PV systems operation is focused on this issue. Models for predicting the state of the sky, nowcasting solar irradiance and forecasting solar irradiation are studied and exemplified. Statistical as well as artificial intelligence methods are described. The efficiency of photovoltaic converters is assessed for any weather conditions. Weather modeling and forecasting of PV systems operation is written for researchers, engineers, physicists and students interested in PV systems design and utilization. “p>
