Thriving Post-World War Two America created cities that were no longer dependent upon America's major city centers, but rather a network of regional developments. Highways allowed metropolitans to rapidly expand and engulf the small satellite towns that were once independent of any major city. Small satellite communities, like Lake Orion, Michigan, were forced to function very differently; Main Street was no longer the center of the community, but rather viewed as an inconvenient place of the past. As the suburbs developed on fringes of town, community borders slowly blurred one town into the next. Today these satellite communities lack identity, but have the embodied attributes to become a viable urban core. A reinvestment in these existing downtown conditions, via the intervention of a community catalyst, can establish these lost identities. The study of Lake Orion's, past, present and future frameworks inspired a connection back to the community's waterfront roots. By reengaging the community's assets in new ways, innovative programing and development opportunities are presented, turning what were once limitations into opportunities for the community's future.

The concept of community manifests from a location’s collective history, geography, culture, economy, and the perceptions of the people who contribute to these systems. These shared experiences result in community identity. Conversely, the dissociation of one’s community may lead to identity decline, or a diminished sense of community identity (Howard-Grenville, Metzger, &Meyer, 2013). Drawing upon design-thinking strategies, the purpose of this research was to explore how design thinking integrates and supports the process of community identification by way of a community development initiative within the borough of Bellevue, Pennsylvania. A secondary purpose recorded the influence of design thinking on the creation of social capital and its influence on community dissociation, identity decline, and public perception. Due to its human-centered focus, design thinking is uniquely qualified to engage with community members and explore the unique qualities of the community and the shared perceptions of its citizenry. Yet, there is minimal research detailing the deliberate use of design-thinking methodologies in support of community identification and development and no recorded instance of such techniques having been used in Bellevue. This research follows a purposive sample of 20 stakeholders and their engagement with this research. It records their perceptions, their experiences, and the influence they had in the creation of social capital, the articulation of community identity, and the inspiration behind community development initiatives. Results culminated in three concept posters advocating graphic rebranding via signage, consistency in code reinforcement, and mini-murals enhancing walkability within the Bellevue community. While this research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of design thinking, community identity, and development initiatives within small communities, the solution phase did not produce innovative solutions typically associated with design thinking and needs further exploration.

This book presents findings of a 1993 study of how design in the curriculum helps students achieve national educational objectives. It also explores opportunities for expanding the role design can play in students' academic lives. Results of the 1993 study reveal how the use of design experiences in classrooms provides teachers and students with a learning construct for the next century. The book summarizes descriptive research that makes qualitative statements regarding current classroom practice and identifies effective models for using design in classrooms. The research tapped three primary sources of data: (1) a review of the literature; (2) a national qualitative survey of teachers; and (3) site visits to 10 schools. Also, the researchers conducted qualitative interviews with principals, curriculum coordinators, other school or district administrators, teachers, teachers' aides, students, and parents. The six chapters include: (1) "Learning Through Design"; (2) "Lifelong Learning"; (3) "A Strategy for Excellent Teaching"; (4) "Design in the Curriculum"; (5) "Opportunities and Challenges for Schools"; and (6) "Conclusions and Recommendations." Throughout history and around the world, community members have come together to build places, be it settlers constructing log cabins in nineteenth-century Canada, an artist group creating a waterfront gathering place along the Danube in Budapest, or residents helping revive small-town main streets in the United States. What all these projects have in common is that they involve local volunteers in the construction of public and community places; they are community-built. Although much attention has been given to specific community-built movements such as public murals and community gardens, little has been given to defining community-built as a whole. This volume provides a preliminary description of community-built practices with examples from the disciplines of urban design, historic preservation, and community art. Taken as a whole, these community-built projects illustrate how the process of local involvement in adapting, building, and preserving a built environment can strengthen communities and create places that are intimately tied to local needs, culture, and community.
