America is changing. Many of the most noticeable changes in day-to-day life are associated with the advancing capabilities of computer systems, the growing variety of tasks they can accomplish, and the accelerating rate of change. Advanced engineering environments (AEEs) combine advanced, networked computer systems with advanced modeling and simulation technologies. When more fully developed, AEEs will enable teams of researchers, technologists, designers, manufacturers, suppliers, customers, and other users scattered across a continent or the globe to develop new products and carry out new missions with unprecedented effectiveness. Business as usual, however, will not achieve this vision. Government, industry, and academic organizations need to make the organizational and process changes that will enable their staffs to use current and future AEE technologies and systems. Design in the New Millennium: Advanced Engineering Environments: Phase 2 is the second part of a two-part study of advanced engineering environments. The Phase 1 report, issued in 1999, identified steps the federal government, industry, and academia could take in the near term to enhance the development of AEE technologies and systems with broad application in the U.S. engineering enterprise. Design in the New Millennium focuses on the long-term potential of AEE technologies and systems over the next 15 years. This report calls on government, industry, and academia to make major changes to current organizational cultures and practices to achieve a long-term vision that goes far beyond what current capabilities allow.

This groundbreaking, comprehensive survey of workplace architecture of the new century captures emerging themes and ideas in office design from around the world. Rapid organizational, economic, and technological change has led to the creation of new workplace models that challenge designers to rework traditional theories. "The 21st Century Office" features forty-five case studies of offices planned or opened after January 2000 that showcase revolutionary designs in response to contemporary design challenges. The book begins by differentiating between today's workplace and the mechanistic, process-driven workplace model of twentieth-century modernism. This is followed by chapters focusing on four main thematic directions in contemporary office design-narrative, nodal, neighborly, and nomadic. Among the offices featured are Ogilvy & Mather, Los Angeles; Reebok, Canton, MA; TBWA/Chiat/ Day, Los Angeles; PricewaterhouseCoopers, Philadelphia; Oliver, IBM, Santa Monica, CA.

The last millennium has not been a great success. We have advanced in science and technology, but not much in human behaviour. Is it possible that this has been due to poor thinking? Edward de Bono maintains that the thinking of the last millennium has been concerned with WHAT IS. This is the thinking of analysis, criticism and argument. What we have not sufficiently developed is the thinking concerned with WHAT CAN BE. This is thinking that is creative and constructive, and which seeks to solve conflicts and problems by designing a way forward. The emphasis of his proposed new thinking is on design and not judgement.

“Have you tried peptides? Small proteins, the best in the land! Won’t you try peptides? Keep all your body processes in hand! For labor and lactation oxytocin you must buy! Enkephalin always gives a good runner’s high! So won’t you try peptides? Small proteins, the best in the land!” The above words [1], penned by Gary Gisselman to open Peptide Ångst: La Triviata, the opera which made its world premiere on July 1, 1999, also serve as a fitting charge to the th 16 American Peptide Symposium. This latest edition of a premier biennial series was held under the auspices of the American Peptide Society, June 26–July 1, 1999, at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis,Minnesota, with the undersigned serving as Co-Chairs. The fortunate coincidence of the calendar allowed us to set as the theme “Peptides for the New Millennium”, and in our judgment, the approximately 1200 participants [2] who converged in the Twin Cities from academic and industrial institutions in 36 countries were treated to an exciting and stimulating conference that left most everyone with an enthusiastic vision for the future of our field. The present Proceedings volume should serve as a handy reference source and succinct snapshot of peptide science at essentially its century mark – the clock having started with the initial contributions of Emil Fischer and Th. Curtius.
