Excerpt from Industrial Arts Design: A d104book of Practical Methods for Students, Teachers, and Craftsmen Industrial arts design develops the principles Of industrial design in a new and logical form which, it is believed, will simplify the teaching Of craft design. Chapters I to V deal with the elemen tary problems confronting the designer as he begins the first steps on his working drawing; Chapters VI to VIII Show the methods by which he may express his individuality through contour or outline enrichment, while Chapters IX to XVII explain the treatment Of the most difficult form Of decoration, that of surface enrichment. The Appendix. The appendix is added to Show the manner inwhich the rules may be directly applied to a course of study in either pottery or art metal. The present work is not intended to include the chemistry Of glaze mixing or other technical requirements to which reference is made in the appendix; consequently the reader is referred to The Potter's Craft by C. F. Binns and Pottery by George J. Cox for fuller explanations Of the formulae and technical ities Of the craft. Source of Principles. The principles herein advocated are directly related to architectural design which is to be regarded as the standard authority for the industrial arts designer. It was necessary to state these principles in the form of sufficiently flexible rules which would allow the student to use his own judgment, but at the same time, restrict him to the essential principles of good design. Rules. This presentation of the principles Of design by means of flexible rules in concrete form, serves to vitalize design by virtue of their immediate application to the material. The rules likewise save time for both pupil and instructor. This is regarded as an important factor, inasmuch as the amount Of time usually allotted to classroom teaching of design is limited. While these rules are applied to the specific materials, the designer may readily adjust them to other materials and find them equally applicable. Direct copying of designs from the illustrations is a dangerous expedient and is to be discouraged as a form of plagiarism which will eventually destroy the student's initiative, originality, and reputation for creative work. Digital technologies are changing the relationship between design and construction: with computer models, CAD/CAM, and prototyping, designers can gain direct control of building and construction processes. The ability to digitally model designs, and thus to use those models directly in the context of production, creates a synthesis between design and construction in keeping with the tradition of the close relationship between design and craftsmanship, between the quality of the design and the rules of the craft. The evolution of the culture of design and construction is the underlying theme of this book. The aim is to discuss the direction that innovation is now taking, with a particular focus on today’s cutting-edge architectures. The method addresses the ways in which different societies have dealt with the issues of their age regarding design and construction, the different contributions provided by various techniques, and with them the meanings expressed by the architecture. As building design using digital tools requires specific skills in the fabrication processes and in the languages used by information technology, the book also offers a practical guide to new methods and techniques of managing and controlling fabrication for AEC. A systematic analysis of new skills used in the design process presents an overview of opportunities for architects and engineers. By collecting information on significant projects and analyzing them, the book explores the technical and artistic potential of digital technology. The cases studied are the outcomes of groundbreaking projects which were able to give form and significance to technological research. They show that digital tools are not the exclusive prerogative of large firms but can also be adopted by teams working across small and medium-sized firms – firms which have been able to use informed research to link innovative design with the possibilities offered by digital fabrication in architecture.

Interest in the practice of various forms of craftsmanship has grown in recent times. Yet, a detailed picture of the know-how connected to the manual trades is lacking. Through direct dialogue with active designers and craftspeople, this publication addresses the question of how knowledge of craftsmanship can find a place in the living and working environments of the 21st century. People are at the heart of this volume, people who on a small scale design, produce and sell goods and make a living from it. These people include creative tradesmen, artisans, designer-makers and a new developing group of self-made entrepreneurs, who, with many different educational backgrounds, combine creative work with technology and production to develop unique and economically viable ways of living and working. Through visual representations of the products, workplaces and people and through text based on interviews, the works of the selected craftspeople are presented as manifestations of highly original creative processes.
