Interior design has taken on an essential role in transforming the quality of the spaces where we dwell and spend our lives. It is no longer a discipline limited only to furnishing spaces. Today, interior design is a major cultural and professional field, ready to take on brand-new phenomena of contemporary society. The emergence of demand for inhabitable and hospitable spaces gives interior designers the difficult, yet strategic task of giving rise to a new “civilization of dwelling”. This civilization should be equipped to spotlight the anthropological aspects of habitat, offer new ways of improving, equipping and using private and public spaces, brands, and services, including by drawing on fresh forms of cross-pollination between design and artistic disciplines. Through the contributions of many key players in contemporary design and teachers and researchers of the Interior Design Degree Program at the Politecnico di Milano, the book offers wide-ranging ideas on the latest frontiers of themes that have been explored by the (re)definition of the educational plan of the degree program, both in teaching methods and in its responsiveness to input from the outside world. The themes chosen are emblematic of a broader panorama, one in constant flux, which the book represents with maps like an archipelago of subjects where "waves" of further possible connections are constantly refracted. "Ideas in dialogue" on topics are interwoven with "side notes" and an extensive repertoire of images from designs and research of different teachings. They highlight the plurality of perspectives and interpretations of a vast cultural horizon, as well as the generally a-methodological identity of Italian design. This is a scenario in ceaseless motion, which the book seeks to recount through a graphic design that is fluid and extremely hypertextual.

This publication celebrates the skill, talent, and cooperation needed to create interior landscapes, a unique design discipline melding the exterior garden with the built architectural environment to bring the vitality and liveliness of nature inside the many diverse structures in which we live and work. The permanent display of living plants inside buildings meant for, but not limited to, human rather than horticultural use is a relatively recent phenomenon. Interior Landscapes will illustrate how sophisticated this discipline has become in a space of only thirty years.

Practically all books written on interior landscape address the needs of home gardeners or the more detailed needs of business owners and researchers. Technicians, trainees, and advanced personnel alike--those who must maintain large interior installations on a commercial level--have not had ready access to information often critical to performing their job successfully. Finally, here is a dictionary specifically compiled for the interior landscape professional. It fills the gap in the literature by covering all terms that apply to interior landscaping. Definitions of more than 1,000 interior landscape terms are listed in alphabetical order for easy access. Each definition is brief but thorough to provide the right depth needed by the working professional. Although terms are described at a level that requires no background in the science of horticulture, the Interior Landscape Dictionary also provides technical terminology for those who require it. Nearly 130 illustrations--including 70 photographs--make it easy to identify specific plants and treatment for various plant diseases and pests. Detailed appendices cover both Latin and common plant nomenclature, pronunciation of Latin names, and lists of additional reading materials for reference. Unlike other botanical dictionaries that have too few illustrations and too many complex definitions, the Interior Landscape Dictionary has the right blend of information and format for the daily needs of interior landscapers. It is a valuable reference source for professionals and trainees in the fields of landscape architecture and management, interior design, horticulture, architecture, and plant science.

Interior design can be considered a discipline that ranks among the worlds of art, design, and architecture and provides the cognitive tools to operate innovatively within the spaces of the contemporary city that require regeneration. Emerging trends in design combine disciplines such as new aesthetic in the world of art, design in all its ramifications, interior design as a response to more than functional needs, and as the demand for qualitative and symbolic values to be added to contemporary environments. Cultural, Theoretical, and Innovative Approaches to Contemporary Interior Design is an essential reference source that approaches contemporary project development through a cultural and theoretical lens and aims to demonstrate that designing spaces, interiors, and the urban habitat are activities that have independent cultural foundations. Featuring research on topics such as contemporary space, mass housing, and flexible design, this book is ideally designed for interior designers, architects, academics, researchers, industry professionals, and students.

Through a range of case studies, authors extend the notion of flow beyond the western industrialised world and embrace a wider geography while engaging with the specificity of climate and place. Accompanied by stunning colour illustration and photography, Flow brings together historical, theoretical and practice-based approaches to consider themes of nature, mobility, continuity and frames.
