Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett | Book Summary How does one define a well-lived, joyful life? What does it take to have one? Is it even possible to have one, or change a less successful life for the better? These are the some of the common questions people from all walks of life ask themselves every day. Everyone from successful professionals to entry level graduates ask themselves what defines a life full of satisfaction and joy. Sadly, the answer is not a direct one.Designing Your Life tries to offer another view to the problem. This book is specifically about living life by design. Authors Bill Burnett and Joel Evans believe that anyone can design the life they love and live it to the fullest. The book further pushes forth the view that there isn't one life to live but many, and that the ideals of success and happiness that most people have are not exactly true. The book opens with real-life examples of people who carried the wrong ideals of a well lived and successful life well into the latter part of their life and careers, only stopping to realise something was wrong when a part of them suddenly felt incomplete. The concept of design is not easily understood by everyday folks. Most people think of it from an engineering point of view and imagine it involves the creation of new products, technology, and services. What they never imagine is that design can be used to create new lives. This is the crooked belief that the book sets out to straighten through its explanation of design and the way it can be used to remodel and reframe life and people's views of it.The correlation between designers and their love for problems is examined in another section, with the book attributing the creation of most, if not everything, people use today to designers' ideas of using problems to get day-to-day solutions. Designers are always looking for questions so that they can find answers to their design ideas. Readers learn the concept of reframing and how every common question gets reframed in life design so as to find new and more helpful answers for it. The reframing process is further explained as taking new information about a problem, choosing a new point of view and prototyping it afresh to find new solutions. It is through this process that most design ideas are born.Following their step-by-step approach, the authors continue to introduce the main topic of the book, the Life Design process. They show how it can be used to better the life one's already living or create another one based on mere possibilities. They also explain its reliance on asking questions, researching, and team work. The book also introduces a different type of thinking: thinking like a designer. Before deciding to use the Life Design process, the book provides readers with the five mindsets they are supposed to have and shows how they are best applied. The renowned designer and style guru Ilse Crawford showcases her body of influential, holistic work for the first time, articulating her groundbreaking philosophies for design and living. Studioilse, the award-winning design studio founded by Ilse Crawford, bridges the worlds of interior design, architecture, and product design with the philosophy of putting the human being at the center. Fascinated by what drives us and makes us feel alive, Crawford says: "When I look at making spaces, I don’t just look at the visual. I’m much more interested in the sensory thing, in thinking about it from the human context, the primal perspective, the thing that touches you." Featuring Studioilse’s work to date, from private residences to hotels, restaurants, and retail projects, this book illustrates the effectiveness of design grounded in human needs and desires. Layering materials and textures, combined with her understanding of human behavior, Crawford’s designs are sensual and accessible. A forerunner of the holistic design movement a decade ago, her humanistic approach has now become the norm. This volume illustrates why Crawford’s design philosophy is so seminal—her work has influenced not only a generation of Dutch and European designers, but also Americans due to her acclaimed Soho House New York. With new photography and essays by Crawford and design critic Edwin Heatcote, this inspirational volume is sure to be one of the most important design books of the year.

Design plays an essential role in our daily lives. You don't have to be a designer to design your life. But it does not hurt to have some professional help. It took designer Vince Frost more than 25 years as a professional to appreciate the power of the design process as a means for improving his life. If my design process brings value to me, perhaps it can bring value to others. Or, more radically, bring others to recognise their own value. This book will not solve your problems. You have to do that yourself. But this book will inspire you to work better at living better.

As an interior designer and lifestyle blogger, a lot is asked of me questions and how to translate my style is what I am asked the most. From now, "my look" has become distinct enough that I like to think if you have seen a array of police from five different houses, you would immediately identify the one I designed. That said, you may not be able to easily summarize it in a few words. My looks aren't about one thing or the other but rather it's a specific mix that I've spent years developing. You can take the title of this book literally: Everything in these pages is really made for living. In the rooms I design, the sofas are matched with beautiful ottomans upholstered in tactile fabrics that, yes, you can actually put your feet up on (or, in my case, Converse). In my own kitchen, I used one of my favorite materials: beautiful, variegated Moroccan glazed terra-cotta tiles. They're full of nicks and dings; no two pieces are alike. And that's why I love them. "Perfect" is not my goal.

Design For Life written by Stuart Walker and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-21 with Architecture categories.

Stuart Walker’s design work has been described as life-changing, inspiring, disturbing and ferocious. Drawing on an extraordinarily diverse range of sources and informed by creative practice, Design for Life penetrates to the heart of modern culture and the malaise that underlies today’s moral and environmental crises. The author argues that this malaise is deep-seated and fundamental to the modern outlook. He shows how our preoccupation with technological progress, growth and the future has produced a constricted view of life – one that is both destructive and self-reinforcing. Based on over twenty-five years of scholarship and creative practice, he demonstrates the vital importance of solitude, contemplation, inner growth and the present moment in developing a different course – one that looks squarely at our current, precarious situation while offering a positive, hopeful way forward – a way that is compassionate, context-based, human scale, ethically motivated and critically creative. Design for Life is an intensely original contribution that will be essential reading for design practitioners and students. Written in a clear, accessible style, it will also appeal to a broader readership, especially anyone who is concerned with contemporary society’s rising inequalities and environmental failings and is looking for a more constructive, balanced and thoughtful direction.
