The book pursues a "close reading" of the biblical verses that it has chosen for reflection and of selected rabbinic sources that relate to these verses. Whereas some commentaries feel it a virtue to impose agreement between divergent traditions, the aim of Destination Torah is to allow each precious text to impart its own message. At the book's heart is the biblical revelation as a coherent whole, setting out to replace an older mythological perception of ourselves and our physical and spiritual world with its Torah view. That view is Destination Torah's quest.

As a chapter-by-chapter introduction to the Torah (the Pentateuch, or the first five books of the Bible), this work provides an excellent source for interfaith study of the Five Books of Moses; it provides a wealth of representative examples of the Torah in the Christian scriptures and in the rabbinic teachings of the midrash and the Talmud. There are sections on the Torah as a source of inspiration, its place in the ritual and prayer life of the synagogue, the term "Old Testament," and how the divisions of the Hebrew Bible compare to standard Christian editions of the Bible. In addition, major chapters are devoted to Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Each of these chapters is subdivided into the following sections: An introductory overview including diverse highlights of the particular book, A literal chapter-by-chapter description of the book, Representative quotations of that particular book within the Christian scriptures, Representative quotations of that particular book within the rich teachings of rabbinic literature; and finally, A special section of text study with notes for suggested readings. Other topics include a brief historical overview of the biblical period, the place of women in the Bible, who wrote the Torah, the development of Jewish law, the Torah in Jewish life, the Torah in Christian life, and what the Torah says about life today. Do you ever feel like youre wandering in a wilderness alone? Are you searching for the same freedom the children of Israel sought, only to find oppression at every turn? Are you looking for a life filled with promise, only to be repeatedly disappointed? You are not alone. We are all on a journey, from slavery to sin to the ultimate Promised Land in Heaven, where we will be free. Everything in between is a wilderness experience. Moses expounded on freedom in the wilderness. He explained exactly where to find it and how to get there. He clearly spoke to the Jew and the foreigner. The question is: Does He speak to the Christian as well? In her book Finding Freedom, Dr. Stundahl will wander through the wilderness of Deuteronomy and explore the Hebraic roots of Christianity. Finding Freedom reveals the concepts of the Torah, assembled in the same format in which they were studied by the Jewish communities since the Babylonian exile. These concepts include humility, idolatry, evil speech, teaching, learning, remembering and listening. The analysis of each portion of the Torah considers its applicability to the life of a Christian. As the history of Christianity and the Jewish elements of the Gospel are discovered, the shadows of Jesus Christ are revealed. Wherever you are in the wilderness of your life, you too can find the freedom intended just for you! Experience the reading, the writing, and the dance of the Torah.

Is the Bible, the most influential book in world history, still relevant? Why do people dismiss it as being irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible, will demonstrate how it remains profoundly relevant—both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will cause you to reexamine your doubts. The title of this commentary is The Rational Bible because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager’s words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Prager’s forty years of teaching to people of every faith and no faith at all. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world in general and to you on a personal level. His goal: to change your mind—and, as a result, to change your life.

The Blessing And The Curse written by Jeff S. Anderson and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-07 with Religion categories.

The "magical power of the spoken word" is a topic that often comes up in a discussion of biblical blessings and curses. What is the source of social and linguistic power behind these blessings and curses? Many theologians would agree that God can and does bless, but does God also curse? If so, what does that mean to the biblical theology of the Old Testament and the Christian church? Anderson's The Blessing and the Curse applies speech act theory as one way to understand the performative function of blessings and curses. The concept of speech acts provides a method of recognizing the potent social power of language to accomplish certain ends, without drawing a hard line of distinction between word-magic and religion. Even though the chief concepts and practices of blessings and curses are deeply rooted in the broad cultural environment of the ancient Near East, tracing specific trajectories of Old Testament blessings and curses as theological themes conveys broad, inescapable implications for the biblical narrative and the Christian church.

Christ Redeemed Us From The Curse Of The Law written by Jarvis J. Williams and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-08 with Religion categories.

Jarvis J. Williams argues that the Jewish martyrological ideas, codified in 2 and 4 Maccabees and in selected texts in LXX Daniel 3, provide an important background to understanding Paul's statements about the cursed Christ in Gal. 3.13, and the soteriological benefits that his death achieves for Jews and Gentiles in Galatians. Williams further argues that Paul modifies Jewish martyrology to fit his exegetical, polemical, and theological purposes, in order to persuade the Galatians not to embrace the 'other' gospel of their opponents. In addition to providing a detailed and up to date history of research on the scholarship of Gal. 3.13, Williams provides five arguments throughout this volume related to the scriptural, theological and conceptual, lexical, grammatical and polemical points of contact, and finally the discontinuities between Galatians and Jewish martyrological ideas. Drawing on literature from Second Temple traditions to directly compare with Gal. 3.13, Williams adds new insights to Paul's defense of his Torah-free-gentile-inclusive gospel, and his rhetoric against his opponents.
