Una inmigración que empezaba en el mismo año de la independencia uruguaya en 1830 con la llegada de los primeros comerciantes hanseáticos y que vivió su gran auge en los años veinte y treinta del siglo XX. ¿Quiénes eran estas personas que abandonaron su vida en Europa para "hacerse su América" en el Río de la Plata? El libro documenta con detalle la llegada de los diferentes grupos de habla alemana y su presencia en Uruguay. Describe, entre otros, los diversos intentos infructuosos de colonización en el interior y la llegada de los inmigrantes suizos que introdujeron la lechería, quesería y hotelería en Uruguay. Asimismo detalla los conflictos entre los simpatizantes nazis y los refugiados judíos y políticos en Montevideo durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La obra ofrece también una visión de conjunto sobre la situación actual de las últimas congregaciones y clubes, así como del continuo desplazamiento de la lengua alemana entre los descendientes de los inmigrantes.

Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is the oldest continuing reference work in the field.
