Mukuru slum is a sprawling informal settlement in Embakasi constituency of Nairobi City. I found myself living in this squalid habitation by default, having lost my job and properties in circumstances detailed in my previous book, 'No more oppression'. The pathetic shanty made of iron sheet houses and clumsy drainage system, muddy dirt roads and poor lighting would intimidate any soul. Cohabiting with army of rats, swarms of mosquitoes, cockroaches and bed bugs was not only embarrassingly demoralizing but a constant nuisance. For me, adapting from a middle class to ghetto lifestyle was not a mean achievement. Not unlike Moses adjusting from a prince in Pharaoh's Palace to a shepherd in the Midian desert; it took God's grace and revelation that God had a purpose for the drill. After a few months in the slum I got acquainted with a few associates from similar background, purpose and calling. Some were hawkers, tailors, masons and evangelists, but that was not a mighty challenge in the given circumstances. It was either we co-operate or go for each other's throats in survival for the fittest. We chose the latter, and soon we brainstormed about starting a faith based organization, to address our plight. The idea grew rapidly and we eventually formed the, Kiss network, under SUN (Shofco Urban network). The group focus is on savings, property investments and income generation activities.During our weekly meetings, one of the members invited me to attend their Sunday service and I accepted the invitation, not knowing this will change my life forever. It was a small congregation of about twenty believers, in a tiny iron-sheets church on the banks of the Ngong River, but the power of the Holy Spirit was overwhelming. God does not work by tyranny of numbers but through 'harmony of purpose'. A close bond was established instantly, and fulfilment of my evangelism dream realized. It was that simple; just like the Elijah and Elisha connection. When you meet your 'destiny partners, and strike the 'harmony of Purpose', you get energized and inspired to do exploits (Daniel 11:32.) Incidentally it was during that time that I wrote this book and polished my other two best sellers, 'The Sound of Abundance ' and 'No more Oppression'. In the pathetic conditions in the slums, and without the benefit of a laptop or other fancy gadgets, writing was a herculean task. I had no funds to access internet in cybercafés either, but i had the passion and determination that comes with harmony of purpose. Whenever i got a break from the tedious tasks of the day, i would not waste a minute but launched into furious writing. I had to win the battle. My pen & Laptop are my guns and the words are my bullets. I knew I had a divine purpose and a mandate in my life, to accomplish my mission in this planet of the living. Nothing would stop me; not even calamities and misfortunes. The enemies may shave your hair, but they forget it will grow again. They may lock you in jail but they cannot stop you from praising the Lord till the shackles break and prison doors open. Your testimony of victory shall receive a standing ovation on earth and in heaven!You do not need to have lived in the ghetto in order to evangelize there, but you need to understand the mindset of the ghetto hustlers. Before you rush to prescribe the exodus from the ghetto formula, you need to comprehend the genesis of the slums. Most of the slum dwellers were either born there or came to live there through the urban migration and economic forces equilibrium. Many turn to narcotic drugs, alcohol and immorality or crime as a coping mechanism while others wallow in self-pity leading to anxiety, depression and related health complications. I believed I was in the slums for a divine purpose. I was in the right place and the right time to accomplish God's calling. The covid-19 epidemic exploded all over the world when I was in the slums in March 2020.
