This study provides a comprehensive review of the current state of the UK housing stock, dealing in particular with that in the public sector. It brings together all currently available information including statistical information of specified aspects - for example, condition of high-rise and system built dwellings. Conclusions drawn from the study show disrepair is now the major problem for the ageing UK dwelling stock; that an existing backlog of essential work is not being met and that the comparatively new stock in the public sector faces particular problems in view of the lack of sufficient maintenance work over the last decade and the large number of system built and high-rise properties in public ownership.

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to housing policy and finance in Britain. It describes changes in the condition and tenure of housing in the post-war period, and contrasts the massive investment in house building and improvement with allegations that housing conditions are deteriorating. It describes the rise of the public housing sector and the slight decline in the face of the Thatcher government's policy on council house sales, which followed. The book thus provides a background for the development of housing policy over the next decade.

Originally published in 1986, this book provides an authoritative summary of late 20th Century trends which affected housing stock and a comprehensive commentary on policies which were designed to improve housing stock. The policies referred to are specific to England and Wales but the experience is relevant to other countries facing similar trends: a growth in owner-occupation, increasing problems of disrepair and low levels of investment in the housing stock. It will be on interest to those concerned with levels of investment in older urban areas, with the impact of subsidies on housing tenure, and with the role of government in controlling housing quality.

First published in 1981, Libya: The Experience of Oil provides a comprehensive overview of Libya’ s socio-economic development since the reform of 1961. It reviews Libya’s oil endowment and draws attention to the deficiencies in the country’s renewable natural resources and in the availability of unskilled labour and trained professional staff. The absorption of oil wealth after 1961 is shown to have been severely constrained by poor factor endowment in land and labour resources. The book shows that by end of the 1970s there had been a significant redistribution of wealth along with a reorganization of the economy, such that almost all production, distribution and resources were under public control. A recurring feature observed in this pattern of change is that rates of investment, sectoral allocations to the development spending, improvement in the standard of living and the level of social service provision advanced at a constant rate after oil and that the revolution had little impact on the rate of improvement in the development indicators. This is book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of African studies, African politics, geopolitics and international relations.
