Aus welchen Gründen setzen Unternehmen (Währungs-)Derivate ein? Der Autor geht dieser Frage nach, indem er zunächst verschiedene Theorien zur Rechtfertigung des unternehmerischen Einsatzes von Derivaten zu Risikomanagementzwecken zusammenfaßt, welche die grundsätzliche Redundanz von Absicherungsmaßnahmen auf vollkommenen Märkten nach Modigliani/Miller (1958) außer Kraft setzen. Diese Ansätze vermuten einen Zusammenhang zwischen unternehmerischem Derivateeinsatz und ausgewählten Unternehmenseigenschaften.Mit besonderem Augenmerk auf Währungsrisiken bestimmt Daniel Mahayni Näherungsgrößen für diese Zusammenhänge anhand ihres separaten Einflusses im Rahmen einer univariaten, ihr Zusammenspiel im Kontext einer multivariaten Probit- und Tobit-Analyse erstmalig auf der Grundlage von Jahresabschlußdaten deutscher Industrieunternehmen für das Geschäftsjahr 1998. In diesem Zusammenhang erfolgt auch eine genaue Betrachtung des für die Analyse notwendigen ökonometrischen Instrumentariums. Die erzielten Ergebnisse stehen in weiten Teilen in Einklang mit den Resultaten sowohl verwandter empirischer Untersuchungen für US-amerikanische Unternehmen als auch deskriptiv orientierter deutscher Evidenz zum Derivateeinsatz und liefern einige zusätzliche Erkenntnisse hinsichtlich der Bestimmungsgründe des Währungsderivateeinsatzes deutscher Industrie-, Handels- und Dienstleistungsunternehmen.
