This paper analyses the influence of religious differences amongst 10 villages on the remittance determinants and their socioeconomic impacts in remittance-receiving households in rural Bangladesh. Using micro-economic data from a survey conducted in 2013, multivariate analysis was carried out on 300 rural households. The empirical findings show that the remittance determinants (migrant age, marital status and number of visits; household head age, marital status and employment status) and impacts (saving and investment patterns) vary from religion to religion at the same community level of the households. The study suggests that the strong religious differences in the remittance behaviour of Bangladeshi households and highlights the importance of differentiating religious backgrounds when analysing the determinants of remittances.

This paper analysed the effect of the relation of the household head to the migrant amongst 10 villages on the remittance determinants and their socioeconomic impacts of remittance receiving households in rural Bangladesh. Using micro-economic data from a survey conducted in 2013, statistical analysis was carried out on 300 rural households. The empirical findings provided that the household head relation to the migrant such as father, mother, wife and brother has variation of remittance determinants and their socioeconomic impact in rural area at the origin. The household unit analysis also showed that remittance determinants and socio-economic impact vary from household head relation at the same community level of households. Moreover, relationship between the socioeconomic impact from remittance and demographic determinants also vary due to the household head relationship discrimination among the same rural area at the origin country.

This paper presents an overview of legal framework of EU governing residence permits, employment pass and access to integration, describing the most frequent migration pathways employed by Bangladeshis in Italy. It discusses their migration trajectories, socio-demographic profile, the importance of remittances to Bangladesh, and the impact that Italian migration policy has had upon this group, as well as other non-EU nationals more generally. In this paper rural household micro quantitative data have been collected from Bangladesh to explore the relationship between legal status, remittance and socioeconomic impact at the left behind household members. Using univariate and multivariate model, investigate the factors determining of remittance inflows and their socioeconomic impact at their left behind rural household members. The empirical results suggest that there is economic variation between the documented and undocumented Bangladeshi migrants in Italy. While international migration is unlikely to provide a secure route out of positive socio-economic impact at their household for many Bangladeshis within a restrictive immigration environment, as they become trapped in more vulnerable and less sustainable migration processes. It concludes with a discussion of the socio-cultural integration of the Bangladeshi migrants in Italy and their future integration opportunities to other EU nations.

Using micro-economic data from a survey conducted in 2013, multivariate analysis was carried out on 300 rural households. The empirical findings provided that the remittance micro-economic determinants are associates with socio-economic that vary from married to unmarried migrant and household head at the same community level of the households. The study suggests that marital status has strong correlation with socio-economic as well as socio-demographic characteristics in the remittance behaviour of Bangladeshi households. Thus highlight the importance of differentiating with respect to marital status when analysing the determinants of remittances.

We propose a simple macroeconomic model with input-output sectoral linkages based on Acemoglu et al. (2016) to quantify how changes in aggregate demand due to additional income from household’s remittances propagates through the network of input-output linkages in Sub-Saharan African countries. We first propose two network centrality measures to assess the role of some sectors as key input providers in the economy. Then, we use these measures to quantify the effect of sectoral linkages on sectoral and total output following an increase in remittances inflows. Our empirical results suggest that the effects of remittances on recipient economies increase with the degree of linkages across sectors, which is especially prominent in the case of the financial intermediation sector. Our paper contributes to the emerging macroeconomic literature on the propagation of shocks across sectors and the implications for the whole economy.

Migrants have long faced unwarranted constraints to sending money to family members and relatives in their home countries, among them costly fees and commissions, inconvenient formal banking hours, and inefficient domestic banking services that delay final payment to the beneficiaries. Yet such remittances are perhaps the largest source of external finance in developing countries. Officially recorded remittance flows to developing countries exceeded US$125 billion in 2004, making them the second largest source of development finance after foreign direct investment. This book demonstrates that governments in developing countries increasingly recognize the importance of remittance flows and are quickly addressing these constraints.

International migration, the movement of people across international boundaries to improve economic opportunity, has enormous implications for growth and welfare in both origin and destination countries. An important benefit to developing countries is the receipt of remittances or transfers from income earned by overseas emigrants. Official data show that development countries' remittance receipts totaled 160 billion in 2004, more than twice the size of official aid. This year's edition of Global Economic Prospects focuses on remittances and migration. The bulk of the book covers remittances.
