This paper examined the behavior of Nigeria's imports for the period 1970 to 2004 and important factors that determine imports are identified. The quantitative estimate based on an error correction model indicates that real GDP and measure of openness significantly determined import demand while real exchange rate and real foreign reserve were insignificant in determining the behavior of import in the country. The paper concludes that to increase total imports, it would be essential to implement a set of macroeconomic and sector-specific policies that considerably affect real income and trade openness. Liberal trade policy, expanding real income and the real exchange rate depreciation will increase the flow of foreign goods into Nigeria while the policy of contracting the country's foreign reserve will not help to contain the volume of import demand in the country.

This paper presents a macroeconomic model of the Nigerian economy. The long-run relationships pertaining to the markets for money, foreign exchange, and (non-oil) output are estimated. Subsequently, dynamic equations are estimated for the price level, the real exchange rate, and output. The results are instrumental in explaining the dramatic developments on the foreign exchange market during 1983-86 and 1992-94, the secular depreciation of the real exchange rate since 1985, and the rise and fall of inflation during 1991-97. The methodology could usefully be applied to other economies whose exports are insensitive to exchange rate movements (e.g., other oil-based economies).
